What is a remote open source developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote open source developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

Lead Agentic AI Engineer - Remote US

Moore

Lanham, MD • Remote

$165K - $175K/yr

Full-time

Medical, PTO

Posted 16 days ago

Job description

Small nonprofits change the world every day - feeding neighbors, rescuing animals, tutoring kids, protecting rivers. But most of them are fundraising with spreadsheets, gut instinct, and a development director who wears six other hats.

SimioAccelerate is the product that changes that.

Moore is the largest nonprofit marketing, data, and fundraising company in North America - 5,000 people, billions of data points, decades of expertise. SimioAccelerate is our agentic AI fundraising platform for small and mid-size nonprofits. Our AI agents identify the right donors, craft personalized engagement strategies, and execute multi-step fundraising workflows autonomously - so fundraisers can focus on relationships instead of busywork.

We're looking for a Lead Agentic AI Engineer to own the technical core of this platform. This isn't "add AI to an existing product." You're building the agent infrastructure from the ground up - systems that reason about donor data, plan outreach sequences, integrate with fundraising platforms, and improve themselves through feedback loops.

Your agents will manage real donor relationships at scale, which means they need to be reliable, explainable, and smart enough to know when to hand off to a human. You'll write code every day, but you'll also set the technical direction for the team, make architecture calls that shape the product, and work directly with fundraising organizations to understand what they actually need.

Check outwww.WeAreMoore.com for more information.

This is a full-time, salaried position open to candidates in the US who are eligible to work without current or future sponsorship.

This position is remote within the US.

The salary range for this role is $165,000-175000, depending on skills and expertise.

Your Impact:

  • Design and build multi-agent systems that automate fundraising workflows - donor research, outreach personalization, and campaign optimization.
  • Architect the platform's agent orchestration layer: how agents plan, delegate, coordinate, hold state, and recover from failures.
  • Create evaluation and observability systems so we can measure agent performance, catch failures before donors see them, and continuously improve.
  • Drive the technical roadmap - evaluate new models, frameworks, and approaches as this space evolves.
  • Mentor engineers, run design reviews, and establish the patterns and standards the team builds on.

Your Profile:

  • 6+ years building production SaaS software, with 2+ years in AI/ML or agentic systems.
  • You've shipped agents that real users depend on - not just proofs of concept.
  • Deep Python chops. Comfortable across the modern AI stack: LLM APIs, retrieval systems, vector databases, embeddings, orchestration.
  • You think about agents as systems, not prompts - state management, tool use, failure modes, evaluation, and guardrails are how you think about reliability.
  • Experience integrating AI with enterprise systems (APIs, databases, CRMs) - you know the messy reality of making agents work inside existing tech stacks.
  • You've led technical initiatives and made other engineers better through mentorship, code review, and setting standards.

Bonus points:

  • Background in fundraising, nonprofit tech, or donor engagement platforms.
  • Experience building evaluation frameworks for non-deterministic systems.
  • Contributions to open-source AI projects.
  • Experience working on or around marketing technology platforms (e.g., CRM, marketing automation, SMS, or email platforms).

Why This Role Is Different:

  • You're not starting from scratch. Moore has 5,000 people, hundreds of nonprofit clients, and decades of fundraising data. SimioCloud's cooperative database has hundreds of millions of donor profiles.
  • You'll see your impact. When your agents help a food bank raise 20% more, that translates directly into families fed. The feedback loop between product and mission is immediate and real.

Experience:

  • 6+ years in software engineering, with meaningful time building AI/ML or agentic systems
  • Location: Remote (US). Occasional travel for team offsites and customer visits.

How We'll Support You:

  • Jointhe largest marketing and fundraising company in North America serving the nonprofit industry where we prioritize innovation and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with industry subject matter experts with over 5,000 employees across the enterprise.
  • To help you stay energized, engaged and inspired, we offer a wide range of benefits including comprehensive healthcare, paid holidays and generous paid time off so you can have the time and space to recharge and pursue your other passions and be with the people you care about.
  • Moore is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
