What is a Remote Open Source Developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

Job description

WHAT WE DO

At Vocalytics, we make understanding noisy spaces simple, robust, and actionable. Vocalytics partners with hospitals, commercial real estate, smart cities, and governments to provide the most actionable acoustic intelligence for any space.

Backed by top VC's & Angels, we're growing fast, building the most powerful sound intelligence platform for the physical world.

Sound is everywhere - indoors, outdoors, underwater, and in the sky.

The past couple of years have proven noise in hospital rooms is especially painful.

It leads to poor experience, life-threatening outcomes, and costs hospitals more than $40B every year.

That's a lot of lives at stake and a very expensive problem to solve.

Vocalytics was founded to unlock value in today's noisy world from any connected microphone. Never has this mission been more important in a world that is more socially distanced and health-conscious.

Privacy is a fundamental human right, and trust is a core pillar of everything we build.

We are seeking a sr. full-stack engineer to help build the next version of our platform. This is a hands-on role we would like to see grow into leadership as we're moving quickly to serve a very challenged population in healthcare.

ABOUT THE JOB

As a key engineering role, you will be a foundational member of the growing Vocalytics engineering team. Our engineering team supports multiple hospitals, commercial real estate, and other enterprise facilities, with the most robust sound analytics and a fleet of edge based IoT devices. Our software is edge-based and must process thousands of sound events per minute. API's, databases, analytics, reporting, data retention policies, device fleet management, and more are areas of active development. We also have teams working on embedded systems, computer vision, machine learning, mobile applications, and web interfaces and services. We use a variety of tools, which we regularly evaluate to make sure developer productivity is protected, if not enhanced. We rely heavily on automation.

ABOUT YOU

Responsibilities

  1. Design and create the core software for Vocalytics' internal and customer-facing services. Write, review, and implement software architecture proposals in compliance with edge best practices.
  2. Be a foundational leader of our engineering team and work collaboratively with other developers on the team. Work collaboratively with DevOps, Product Design, Embedded Systems, AI/ML/Data Science, and other teams at Vocalytics.
  3. Test and document your work.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  2. Proficient in ReactJS, NodeJS, Google Vue, and programming with CS training. Familiarity with Typescript or npm is desirable.
  3. Proficient in back-end programming in Python, preferably with FastAPI, Alembic, PostgresSQL, Pytorch/Tensorflow, and audio processing experience.
  4. Experience with Docker/Kubernetes is desirable.
  5. Recent participation in software development and deployment on a Tier 1 cloud service provider, IoT applications, machine learning, or embedded systems.
  6. Experience with wireless networking protocols, systems, and optimizing signal strength/coverage via wifi, PoE, cellular, LoRa, etc.
  7. Excited about working in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
  8. Nice to have (and a bonus if interested in learning!):
    1. Natural Language Processing, Transformers, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks.
    2. Sound Source Localization, Beamforming, Scene Classification.
    3. Security, Encryption, and Anonymization Techniques.
    4. AWS EC2, S3, Sagemaker, Greengrass.

Vocalytics is your opportunity to join a fast-growing seed-stage startup solving real-world problems. Our management has built successful startups, so we understand work/life balance, don't take ourselves too seriously, and value everyone.

CAREERS

Vocalytics is committed to equal employment opportunities and providing employees with a work environment free of discrimination and harassment. All employment decisions are based on business needs, job requirements, and individual qualifications. Vocalytics encourages applicants of all ages.

NOTE TO RECRUITERS

Vocalytics will not accept unsolicited resumes from any source other than directly from a candidate. Any unsolicited resumes sent to Vocalytics, including unsolicited resumes sent to a Vocalytics mailing address, email address, directly to Vocalytics employees, or to the Vocalytics resume database will be considered Vocalytics property. Vocalytics will NOT pay a fee for any placement resulting from the receipt of an unsolicited resume. Vocalytics will consider any candidate for whom an Agency has submitted an unsolicited resume to have been referred by the Agency free of any charges or fees.
