Remote Nuclear Engineer information

What is a remote nuclear engineer?

Remote nuclear engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and optimize nuclear systems and processes while working from a location outside of a traditional nuclear facility, often from home or a remote office. They use specialized software and digital tools to collaborate with on-site teams, conduct simulations, review safety protocols, and support projects related to nuclear energy, medical applications, or research. This remote work setup allows nuclear engineers to contribute their expertise without being physically present at the site, making use of secure data connections and virtual collaboration platforms.

What is the difference between Remote Nuclear Engineer vs Remote Nuclear Technician?

AspectRemote Nuclear EngineerRemote Nuclear Technician
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license, certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree, certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project management (office/field)Equipment testing, maintenance, support (field/office)
Employer & Industry UsageUtilities, consulting firms, government agenciesPower plants, maintenance companies, labs
Common Search/ComparisonDesign, analysis, project oversightEquipment operation, troubleshooting

Remote Nuclear Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and managing nuclear systems, often requiring advanced degrees and licenses. Remote Nuclear Technicians handle equipment testing and maintenance, typically with technical certifications. Both roles are vital in the nuclear industry but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environment.

How does working remotely impact collaboration and communication for nuclear engineers?

Remote Nuclear Engineers typically rely on digital collaboration tools to communicate with project teams, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders. While physical site visits may occasionally be necessary, most design reviews, safety assessments, and data analysis tasks can be conducted virtually. Effective remote communication requires proactive scheduling of video meetings, clear documentation, and frequent status updates to ensure project alignment. Adapting to time zone differences and maintaining strong professional relationships are common challenges, but many organizations provide structured support and regular check-ins to facilitate seamless teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote nuclear engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Nuclear Engineer, you need a solid background in nuclear engineering, physics, and safety protocols, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification such as a PE license. Familiarity with simulation software (like MCNP or SCALE), digital monitoring systems, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating remotely and ensuring safety standards. These competencies are critical for maintaining operational excellence, safety, and effective teamwork in a highly regulated and technical environment.

Nuclear Engineer
The Opportunity:
As a nuclear engineer, you bring the expertise needed to review reactor designs, mechanical and electrical drawings, and the supporting systems required for safe and feasible deployment. That expertise is essential when conducting detailed engineering analyses for the Department of War-evaluating site viability, guiding customers through licensing and permitting pathways, and supporting multiple sites throughout the nuclear lifecycle from construction through decommissioning. We're seeking a nuclear engineer who can apply this technical depth to guide multi-million-dollar energy infrastructure decisions, ensuring leaders receive clear, engineering-driven recommendations that strengthen mission resilience.
At Booz Allen, you'll use your nuclear engineering background to help transform the Department of War's approach to resilient energy. Our team delivers cutting-edge energy solutions to customers who rely on their systems 24/7 to safeguard national security. We need a nuclear engineer who specializes in reactor systems, electrical integration, site viability, and regulatory pathways and who can communicate complex technical insights across interdisciplinary teams to shape the next generation of large-scale energy capabilities.
Take on exciting challenges in the Department of War with us as we help provide resilient, secure energy systems to the warfighter.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience with the design and operation of nuclear reactors, steam systems, and associated electrical interconnections such as reactor vessel, control rods, turbine generator, transformers, protection equipment
  • Experience assessing nuclear site viability, including utility coordination, land access constraints, and environmental clearance requirements
  • Knowledge of nuclear life cycle costs such as construction, commissioning, O&M, and decommissioning
  • Knowledge of Department of Energy (DoE), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and state and federal energy regulations, including licensing and permitting processes
  • Ability to review, compare, and validate vendor technology claims against regulatory, system-integration, and performance requirements
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to CONUS and OCONUS locations
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with energy system design, including distributed generation sources, microgrids, and battery energy storage systems
  • Experience working with the Department of War in government or contractor roles and supporting GS-15 level clients
  • Ability to evaluate risks, tradeoffs, and cost implications to inform acquisition, design, and implementation strategies
  • Ability to leverage electrical modeling software such as EasyPower, ETAP, or SKM
  • Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering (PE) Certification

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
