What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Next Js Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Next Js Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, React, and Next.js, usually backed by a degree in computer science or relevant experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud services such as Vercel or AWS, and testing frameworks is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication skills help remote developers collaborate and deliver high-quality solutions independently. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, maintainable code, and effective teamwork in a distributed work environment.

How do Remote Next.js Developers typically collaborate with team members on projects?

Remote Next.js Developers commonly collaborate using a mix of asynchronous and real-time tools such as Slack, Jira, and GitHub. Daily stand-ups or weekly sprint meetings over video calls help align priorities and clarify any blockers. Code reviews and pull requests are essential for maintaining code quality and fostering team learning. Effective written communication and proactive status updates are crucial since the team is distributed, ensuring everyone stays on the same page and project timelines are met.

Job description

About Vercel:
Vercel is the agentic infrastructure company. We free people and agents to ship what's next.
For more than a decade, Vercel has shaped how the web is built. As the team behind Next.js, v0, and AI SDK, we create products that help builders move from idea to production with speed, security, and exceptional developer experience.
Now, software is entering a new era, and the next generation of products will not just be used by people. They will be built, extended, and operated by agents.
We are building the platform for that future, trusted by companies like OpenAI, PayPal, Ramp, Supreme, and millions of developers worldwide. Whether you're building our products, supporting our customers, growing our community, or shaping our story, you'll help define what comes next.
About the Role:
The Next.js team builds the open source framework that powers millions of applications and shapes how developers build for the web. Our work sits at the intersection of React, framework architecture, developer experience, infrastructure, performance, and production reliability.
We are looking for engineers who are excited to work deeply on open source developer infrastructure. You do not need to be a Next.js expert. You do need strong React expertise, high independence, good product judgment, and the ability to investigate complex technical problems from first principles.
This role is a strong fit for someone with a background in framework development, developer tooling, or product infrastructure: someone comfortable moving across the stack, working in public, and turning ambiguous problems into clear technical direction.
What You Will Do:
In this role, you will work across framework internals, rendering, caching, routing, build systems, developer tooling, documentation, platform integration, and user-facing product behavior. The team is highly distributed, so strong written communication, ownership, and self-direction are essential.
What We're Looking For:
  • Strong React expertise
  • Passion for open source and developer communities
  • Background in framework development, developer tooling, or product infrastructure
  • Comfort working across frontend, backend, build tooling, and runtime systems
  • Strong product sense and care for developer experience
  • Ability to investigate deeply, debug ambiguous issues, and reason from real evidence
  • High independence in a distributed team environment
  • Clear written communication and strong ownership
Bonus If You:
  • Have experience maintaining open source projects
  • Have experience with compilers, bundlers, caching, rendering systems, or distributed infrastructure
  • Familiarity with Next.js, though this is not required
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation package, including equity.
  • Inclusive Healthcare Package.
  • Learn and Grow - we provide mentorship and send you to events that help you build your network and skills.
  • Flexible Time Off.
  • We will provide you the gear you need to do your role, and a WFH budget for you to outfit your space as needed.

The San Francisco, CA base pay range for this role is $208,000 - $312,000. Actual salary will be based on job-related skills, experience, and location. Compensation outside of San Francisco may be adjusted based on employee location. The total compensation package may include benefits, equity-based compensation, and eligibility for a company bonus or variable pay program depending on the role. Your recruiter can share more details during the hiring process.
