What is remote networking?

Remote networking refers to the practice of connecting computers, devices, or entire networks from different locations through the internet or other external networks. This allows employees, teams, or organizations to securely access resources, share information, and collaborate without being physically present in the same place. Common remote networking solutions include VPNs, remote desktop applications, and cloud-based services, all of which help maintain productivity and security for distributed teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, protocols, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field and relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Proficiency with network monitoring tools, VPNs, firewalls, and cloud networking systems is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating remotely and delivering timely solutions. These competencies ensure reliable network performance, effective remote support, and secure connectivity for distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote networking roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote networking roles is troubleshooting connectivity or security issues without direct, on-site access to hardware. Effective communication and strong documentation skills are essential, as you'll often need to collaborate with on-site teams or guide non-technical users through complex processes. Utilizing remote management tools and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of network protocols can help resolve issues efficiently. Building relationships with team members across different locations also enhances collaboration and problem solving.

Overview

We are seeking a Network Engineer to deploy and support network infrastructure for our manufacturing execution system (MES) platform, Synovate. This is a hands-on deployment role—you will travel to client manufacturing facilities to install, configure, and troubleshoot network infrastructure including routers, VPNs, Wi-Fi, and IoT device connectivity. You will work alongside our senior network engineering team, providing critical backup for client implementations while building expertise in industrial network environments. When not deploying, you will contribute to infrastructure automation and internal tooling efforts.

Responsibilities

Client Deployment & Field Support

  • Deploy network infrastructure at client manufacturing sites including routers, switches, WiFi access points, and VPN configurations
  • Configure and troubleshoot WireGuard VPNs and Mikrotik industrial routers for secure client connectivity

  • Troubleshoot IoT device connectivity and ensure reliable communication between edge devices and the platform
  • Serve as backup for the senior network engineer during deployments and escalations
  • Network Operations & Maintenance
  • Monitor and maintain network health across deployed client sites
  • Manage device inventory, firmware updates, and configuration changes
  • Automate Mikrotik network changes where feasible
  • Respond to network incidents and connectivity issues, performing remote diagnostics and onsite remediation when needed
  • Document network configurations, deployment procedures, and troubleshooting runbooks
  • Infrastructure & Automation (Secondary)
  • Contribute to Pythonbased automation tools for network configuration and monitoring
  • Support cloud infrastructure operations in Azure (VMs, networking, identity management)
  • Assist with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructureascode initiatives as the platform matures
  • Required Qualifications
  • Network Engineering: 3+ years handson experience with routers, switches, firewalls, VLANs, and VPN technologies
  • Wireless Networking: Experience deploying and troubleshooting WiFi networks, including site surveys and interference mitigation
  • Benefits: Medical, Dental, Life & ADD, STD, LTD. 401K match. Unlimited PTO.
