How to Become a Remote NET Developer?

To become a remote .NET developer, you need to have several qualifications, including education, years of professional experience, and a range of analytical and creative problem-solving skills. A bachelor’s degree in computer science is the most common degree, although a degree in information technology, statistics, or a closely related technical subject may suffice. You should also have strong programming skills in .NET, as well as other languages, such as C#, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. If you work from home, you need strong communication skills and a reliable internet connection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote .NET Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote .NET Developer, you need strong proficiency in C#, ASP.NET, and object-oriented programming, usually backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Visual Studio, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms such as Azure is typically required, along with certifications like Microsoft Certified: .NET Developer being advantageous. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for effectively collaborating and delivering quality code in a remote environment. These competencies ensure that remote developers can produce robust solutions, work efficiently with distributed teams, and adapt to evolving project needs.

How does a Remote .NET Developer typically collaborate with team members and manage communication across different time zones?

Remote .NET Developers often work with distributed teams, making effective communication crucial. Collaboration is usually managed through tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and project management platforms such as Jira or Azure DevOps. Regular video meetings, clear documentation, and overlapping work hours help ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals and progress. Adapting to asynchronous communication and being proactive in sharing updates are common practices to overcome time zone differences and maintain productivity.

What are Remote .NET Developers?

Remote .NET Developers are software professionals who specialize in building, maintaining, and optimizing applications using the .NET framework, all while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. They leverage technologies such as C#, ASP.NET, and other Microsoft tools to create web, desktop, or mobile applications. Description

The ServiceNow QA/Test Developer/Engineer is a key member of our IT team, responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of ServiceNow platform solutions. This individual plans and executes testing strategies to validate new features, enhancements, and fixes on the ServiceNow platform. By catching issues early and confirming that new functionalities meet business requirements, the ServiceNow QA/Test Engineer maintains a high-performing, user-friendly environment. Working closely with development, product, and operations teams in an Agile workflow, this role not only finds and tracks defects but also drives test automation efforts and continuous improvement in quality practices. This is a mid-level to senior, fully remote position offering growth opportunities and the opportunity to make a significant impact in a dynamic ServiceNow ecosystem.  This is a net new position, previously we have spread these duties amongst the team -- as such we are seeking an individual capable of driving this work and taking ownership to stand up this role with best practices they can bring from their experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute test plans and test cases for new ServiceNow features and enhancements, ensuring functional and performance requirements are met.
  • Perform both manual and automated tests (functional, regression, integration) using ServiceNow's Automated Test Framework (ATF) and other tools to validate end-to-end processes on the platform.
  • Identify and document software bugs, track defects in the issue management system, and collaborate with developers to analyze root causes and verify fixes promptly.
  • Work closely with developers, business analysts, and project managers throughout the development lifecycle to review requirements, provide input on testability, and ensure quality checkpoints are met.
  • Build and maintain automated test scripts to improve coverage and efficiency, integrating tests into the deployment pipelines for frequent, reliable releases.
  • Monitor test execution and quality metrics, clearly communicating progress, defect findings, and risks to stakeholders.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies (planning, stand-ups, retrospectives) to ensure testing activities align with sprint goals and release timelines.
  • Contribute to continual improvement of QA processes and tools; research and implement new testing approaches and leverage ServiceNow platform features to enhance quality assurance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of hands-on software testing or QA experience, including experience with ServiceNow or other complex enterprise applications.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript and familiarity with ServiceNow development (e.g., Glide scripting/configuration).
  • Experience with ServiceNow's Automated Test Framework (ATF) with the ability to write and maintain automated test scripts.
  • Solid understanding of QA methodologies and various test types (functional, regression, UAT, performance); hands-on experience with test case management and defect tracking tools.
  • ServiceNow certification(s) - especially Certified System Administrator (CSA) - highly preferred; additional certs (e.g., Implementation Specialist, Application Developer) are a plus.
  • QA certification(s) such as ISTQB Certified Tester or equivalent are a plus, demonstrating a strong foundation in testing best practices.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams; familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD processes for testing and deployment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with an inclusive approach and ability to collaborate effectively in a remote, cross-functional environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Experience - Minimum 3 years of hands-on software testing or QA experience, including experience with ServiceNow or complex enterprise applications.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required): Strong understanding of QA methodologies and test types (functional, regression, integration, UAT, performance). Experience writing and executing test cases and maintaining traceability to requirements. Experience with test case management and defect tracking tools. Ability to perform root-cause analysis of defects and validate remediation. Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with cross-functional teams. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to high-quality outcomes. Strong communication and collaboration skills in remote, cross-functional environments.
