Job description

Come join the nation's leading organization dedicated to building energy literacy among our nation's K-12 students. The National Energy Foundation (NEF) has been working to achieve its energy literacy mission for 50 years through the implementation of student and teacher education programs focused on energy, natural resources, and the environment, and through the development of premier instructional materials.

NEF is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Director of Client Solutions to help create solutions for and build partnerships with industry, government, and private foundations. The position is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, but NEF will accommodate a fully remote working arrangement for the right candidate. The new Director of Client Solutions will lead NEF's client solutions/business development and marketing efforts across the U.S.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Help secure funding to sustain and grow NEF
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue growth opportunities within and adjacent to the energy industry, including electric and natural gas utilities, state energy programs, private foundations, and major technology companies
  • Direct NEF business development activities, including in the energy efficiency, energy safety, electric transportation, energy workforce, water efficiency, and other mission-aligned areas.
  • Supervise client solutions/business development and marketing communications staff
  • Travel approximately 6-12 times per year to attend trade association conferences, sales/fundraising meetings, etc.
  • Effectively and confidently utilize email, telephone, and social media outreach to build contacts within target industries
  • Utilize Salesforce CRM system to drive lead generation, follow-up, and successful attainment of new NEF partnerships
  • Serve as lead NEF client solutions representative for NEF's current energy efficiency education programs, including annual SOW review
  • Consult with clients and prospective clients to help inform development of new energy education solutions for the utility industry and other partners
  • Collaborate with NEF communications staff to conduct marketing communications efforts
  • Contribute to the development of new marketing pieces
  • Oversee creation of departmental budgets
  • Other responsibilities as needed


Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, MBA a plus
  • Seven plus years of client solutions/business development experience (energy and utilities industry preferred)
  • At least two years of client solutions/business development leadership experience in the energy and utilities industry
  • Strong ability to recruit, mentor, and lead team members
  • Basic understanding of complex state and federal energy regulations, environmental mandates, and compliance frameworks
  • Familiarity with school outreach programs and the needs of classroom educators to meet national and state academic requirements
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite of software programs
  • Strong organizational, communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong attention to detail - meticulous, accurate and thorough
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner and report on multiple projects

Annual Compensation: $90,000-$110,000 base salary (expected range based on experience) plus potential for significant performance bonuses.

This introductory period is designed to provide you with the opportunity to learn your job duties and become familiar with company procedures. During this time, your supervisor will provide training and performance feedback. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of this 90 day period.
