Job description

Location: Remote

Start Date: ASAP

Compensation: Starting Salary $85,000+/year DOE

About Us:

Knowledge Relay is a leading player in the data visualization market, specializing in providing innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of government and nuclear industries.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a Power BI Developer who can turn client requirements into polished, published dashboards. This includes working with our data specialists, writing SQL, designing data models, building visuals, and explaining the results clearly to non-technical stakeholders. In this hands-on, client-facing role at a small company, you must be comfortable working deeply in SQL and participating in client calls.

You'll work across our energy/utilities client base, converting legacy reporting (including Crystal-type Reports) into modern Power BI solutions, and helping shape how we deliver BI as a practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build datasets from scratch— write and optimize SQL queries against source systems based on detailed requirement documents, without relying on pre-built datasets from others.
  • Work with data specialists – Will receive data sets from our data experts where you will need to write SQL against.
  • Convert legacy reports to Power BI — migrate existing Crystal-type Reports into functionally equivalent (or improved) Power BI dashboards
  • Design and build dashboards — translate written requirements into clear, well-designed, user-friendly dashboards and reports
  • Engage directly with clients — participate in requirements-gathering sessions, ask clarifying questions, and support business analysts in scoping reporting needs and be part of validation discussions after initial release.
  • Communicate across audiences — explain technical concepts, tradeoffs, and design decisions in plain language to non-technical stakeholders
  • Manage publishing and access — work with Power BI Service, enterprise gateways, workspace/app structure, and row-level security to get dashboards into clients' hands correctly
  • Use AI tools as part of your workflow — leverage Claude or similar AI tools to speed up development, documentation, QA, and troubleshooting
  • Support the dashboards — pitch in on smaller or more routine tasks (dashboard/report tweaks, data validation, documentation) as needed; this is a small team where everyone wears multiple hats
  • Contribute to data strategy conversations — provide input on data warehousing/Lakehouse concepts as our reporting architecture evolves

Qualifications:

Required Skills

  • Proven experience building Power BI datasets and dashboards from the ground up, including hand-written SQL (not just connecting to pre-built views/datasets)
  • Experience converting Crystal Reports (or similar legacy reporting tools) into Power BI
  • Strong SQL skills — able to read a requirements document and write efficient, correct queries against relational databases
  • Comfortable working directly with clients — requirements gathering, status updates, and validation
  • Experience with Power BI Service administration: publishing, workspaces, enterprise/on-premises data gateways, refresh scheduling
  • Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated ability to translate technical detail for non-technical audiences
  • Experience working remotely, including via VPN and cloud-based environments
  • Comfortable using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, etc.) as part of a daily development workflow
  • A collaborative, flexible, "no task too small" mindset — this role requires both strategic BI work and day-to-day support tasks

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with Maximo BIRT reporting (a plus, though not central to this role)
  • Experience with project/asset management platforms such as Maximo, Primavera P6, eSOMS, or Sentinel
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts and architecture (dimensional modeling, ETL/ELT, Lakehouse patterns)
  • Background in the energy/utilities sector
  • Experience supporting a business analyst in a formal requirements-gathering process

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in Power BI, reporting, or a similar role.

Compensation:

  • Competitive salary package based on experience and skill.
  • Remote work flexibility.
  • Health, dental, vision and LTD insurance.
  • Simple IRA retirement savings plan with company match.
  • Vacation, Sick and Holiday pay.
  • Opportunities for professional development and training.
  • Dynamic and collaborative work environment.

Additional Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents Only
  • This role requires adherence to strict data security and regulatory standards. Full Background, Citizenship, Education, Reference Check and 5 panel-drug screen may be required as part of the hiring process.

Why Join Us?

  • Collaborate with a team of talented professionals on exciting, data-driven projects.
  • Gain exposure to advanced technologies and innovative solutions.
  • Enjoy a supportive, inclusive work environment with growth opportunities.

Pay Range for Position: $85,000-95,000/year depending on experience and based on a 40 hour work week.

PLEASE NO RECRUITERS!!!
