Remote Microgrid Engineer information

What is a remote microgrid engineer?

A Remote Microgrid Engineer is a professional who designs, implements, and maintains microgrid energy systems—self-sufficient power grids that can operate independently or alongside larger utility grids—while working remotely. These engineers leverage digital tools to monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize energy distribution from various sources like solar panels, batteries, and generators. Their work is crucial for providing reliable energy to remote locations, supporting renewable integration, and improving grid resilience. Remote Microgrid Engineers often collaborate with project managers, field technicians, and utility companies to ensure the efficient operation of microgrids.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote microgrid engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Microgrid Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, power systems design, and energy management, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SCADA systems, microgrid controllers, modeling software like HOMER or ETAP, and relevant certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for collaboration and troubleshooting. These competencies are vital for designing reliable, efficient microgrid solutions and ensuring seamless integration and operation from remote locations.

What are some common challenges faced by remote microgrid engineers when managing distributed energy resources?

Remote Microgrid Engineers often encounter challenges in integrating diverse energy sources, such as solar, wind, and battery storage, into a seamless system. Ensuring reliable real-time communication and control across geographically dispersed assets can be complex, requiring robust monitoring and troubleshooting skills. Additionally, engineers must adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and regulations while collaborating closely with utility operators, software developers, and field technicians to maintain efficient and resilient microgrid operations.

What is the difference between Remote Microgrid Engineer vs Remote Power Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Microgrid EngineerRemote Power Systems Engineer

Job Description:

At Hitachi Energy, we're not just building systems-we're powering the future. As a Senior Lead Project Engineer in our Power Conversion Systems (PCS) group, you'll be at the heart of the energy transition, leading technical execution for cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrids, and renewable applications. Based in Raleigh, NC, this role offers the chance to work on high-impact projects that span remote microgrids, grid-scale storage, and commercial energy systems.

You'll be the technical anchor for projects of medium to high complexity, guiding design, engineering, and delivery from concept to commissioning. Whether it's shaping SCADA systems, optimizing inverter-based controls, or collaborating with supply chain and customers, your work will directly influence how energy is generated, stored, and distributed.

This is more than a job-it's a mission. You'll join a team of innovators and problem-solvers who thrive on collaboration, continuous improvement, and delivering solutions that matter. If you're ready to lead with purpose, grow your expertise, and help shape a more sustainable grid, Hitachi Energy is where your impact begins.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Lead technical execution of BESS and renewable energy projects.
  • Review and approve design deliverables and project documentation.
  • Configure control systems and SCADA software for energy applications.
  • Support proposal development and respond to RFIs and RFPs.
  • Collaborate with supply chain to evaluate and approve technical solutions.
  • Manage project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Interface with customers to deliver tailored engineering solutions.
  • Share technical knowledge and support internal training and testing.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Your Background

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and 5+ years of experience in power systems, energy storage, or power electronics; or
  • Master's degree in engineering and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP).
  • Strong technical aptitude in electrical engineering and industrial software.
  • Familiarity with renewable and thermal generation technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
