What is a Remote MEP BIM Modeler?

A Remote MEP BIM Modeler is a professional who creates and manages Building Information Models (BIM) specifically for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, while working remotely. They use specialized software, such as Revit or AutoCAD MEP, to design and coordinate MEP components in construction projects. Their work helps ensure that all MEP systems are accurately represented and integrated within the building's overall digital model. By working remotely, these modelers collaborate with project teams through online platforms, enabling efficient communication and project delivery regardless of location.

What is the difference between Remote Mep Bim Modeler vs Remote Mep Coordinator?

AspectRemote Mep Bim ModelerRemote Mep Coordinator

Industry UsageDesign firms, MEP consulting, BIM service providersConstruction firms, project management teams, MEP contractors

The Remote Mep Bim Modeler focuses on creating detailed BIM models for MEP systems, utilizing specialized software. In contrast, the Remote Mep Coordinator manages project coordination, ensuring models align with project goals. Both roles often work remotely and require BIM-related credentials, but their core responsibilities differ: modeling versus coordination.

What are some common challenges faced when collaborating remotely as an MEP BIM Modeler, and how can they be addressed?

Remote MEP BIM Modelers often face challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across different locations, ensuring model accuracy, and managing communication gaps. These can be addressed by using cloud-based BIM platforms for real-time collaboration, maintaining clear documentation, and participating in regular virtual meetings to clarify design intent and resolve issues promptly. Staying proactive with communication and being responsive to feedback are key to ensuring smooth project delivery in a remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote MEP BIM Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote MEP BIM Modeler, you need expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, strong spatial awareness, and a background in engineering or drafting, often supported by relevant certifications or degrees. Proficiency in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective virtual communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate, coordinated models and efficient project delivery in a digital and distributed work environment.

Job description

Why join Giga
  • The Pace: We're building at a speed most companies talk about but never actually operate at. If you've been bored somewhere else, you won't be here.
  • The Impact: Every person at Giga touches the work that matters. No layers, no waiting for approval chains. You'll see your fingerprints on what we ship.
  • The Team: A team of operators defining the future of AI infrastructure. We recruit A-players from the most innovative companies in the world, and they choose Giga because the work here means more.
  • The Moment: AI doesn't run without power, and that's us. Giga is the picks and shovels behind the AI revolution. This industry is about to explode, and you'll be in the room where it's already happening.

What you'll do
Giga Energy is seeking an experienced BIM Lead to oversee the development and integration of Building Information Models (BIM) across our data center construction portfolio. This role is responsible for coordinating all project stakeholders - architects, structural, MEP, and civil disciplines - to optimize the design, construction, and operation phases of mission-critical projects. The BIM Lead manages digital construction data, enforces model integrity, and drives the workflows that allow Giga's projects to be delivered with speed, accuracy, and constructability.
Where you'll work
We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.
That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities
Model Development & Coordination
  • Develop, manage, and update BIM models supporting design, construction, and operational handover.
  • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, civil engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure model accuracy and consistency across disciplines.
  • Conduct clash detection and lead the resolution of coordination issues using Navisworks, Revit, or equivalent tools.
  • Facilitate regular coordination meetings to review model progress, identify issues, and develop resolutions.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration across all internal teams and external partners.
Standards, Quality, and BIM Execution
  • Create, Implement and enforce BIM standards, protocols, naming conventions, and best practices across all projects.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage BIM Execution Plans (BEP) for each project.
  • Perform quality control checks and model audits to ensure compliance with Giga standards and project requirements.
  • Provide feedback to project teams to drive continuous improvement in modeling practices.
  • Maintain Revit templates, family libraries, and shared content to support consistent project delivery.
Deliverables & Documentation
  • Generate 2D drawings, schedules, and other deliverables from BIM models as required for permitting, construction, and operations.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation including model progress reports, clash detection reports, and coordination meeting minutes.
  • Maintain an organized digital filing system for project models and related documentation in accordance with Giga's data management standards.
Technical Leadership & Training
  • Provide technical support and training to project teams on BIM processes, tools, and workflows.
  • Stay current on BIM technologies, software developments, and industry trends.
  • Evaluate and recommend new BIM tools, plug-ins, and workflows to enhance project efficiency and quality.
  • Support the broader engineering and construction teams in leveraging BIM data for prefabrication, scheduling (4D), and cost (5D) workflows where applicable.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in BIM coordination and management in the construction industry.
  • Proficiency in Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and other relevant BIM tools.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes, building systems, and industry standards.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
