What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and, in some cases, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like ANSYS), and collaborative project management systems is crucial. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help remote engineers effectively coordinate with distributed teams and manage independent tasks. These abilities are vital for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, meeting deadlines, and maintaining productivity in a remote work environment.

What is remote mechanical engineering?

Remote mechanical engineering involves performing mechanical engineering tasks such as designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems from a location outside of a traditional office or job site. Remote mechanical engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) software, simulation tools, and collaboration platforms to communicate with teams and manage projects online. This arrangement allows for flexibility and can enable engineers to work with companies and clients around the world. Remote work in this field is increasingly popular due to advancements in technology and the ability to securely share and analyze complex data online.

Can a mechanical engineer work remotely?

Yes, many mechanical engineers can work remotely, especially in roles involving design, analysis, and simulation using CAD software and other digital tools. However, some positions requiring on-site testing, manufacturing, or equipment maintenance may require physical presence. Remote work opportunities depend on the employer, project requirements, and the engineer's skills with collaboration tools and virtual communication platforms.

How do remote mechanical engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams and manage hands-on project components?

Remote mechanical engineers often rely on a mix of digital collaboration tools, such as CAD software, video conferencing, and project management platforms, to stay connected with on-site teams. While most design and analysis tasks can be completed remotely, they may coordinate closely with local engineers or technicians for tasks that require physical presence, such as prototyping or testing. Clear communication and regular status updates are essential to ensure project goals are met and any issues are addressed promptly. Building strong relationships with on-site team members helps bridge gaps and facilitates smooth project execution.

Job Title: RAC System Design Engineer (Mechanical) $54 - $90 an hour

Location: Remote 12 months with possible extension

Position Overview

System One is seeking a RAC System Design Engineer (Mechanical) to support the design and delivery of an advanced Reactor Air Cooling (RAC) System for a next-generation nuclear energy project. This role will support the ongoing development of a passive reactor cooling system designed to continuously remove heat through natural convection, providing safe and reliable cooling without reliance on pumps or operator actions.

The selected candidate will collaborate with project managers, design engineers, analysts, test engineers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support the successful design, integration, and deployment of this first-of-a-kind reactor technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Design nuclear and industrial mechanical systems including requirements development, engineering analyses, specifications, and system drawings. • Develop and maintain system architecture and design documentation, including Design Basis Documents, P&IDs, and Interface Control Documents. • Establish equipment design bases, including regulatory requirements, functional requirements, performance criteria, and failure mode evaluations. • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams including nuclear, thermal hydraulic, mechanical, I&C, and civil/structural engineering. • Evaluate equipment development requirements and support implementation of technology development strategies. • Develop engineering solutions that support operability, maintainability, and long-term reliability. • Manage technical interfaces with suppliers and review supplier engineering deliverables. • Provide technical oversight of supplier projects and coordinate technical reviews in partnership with supply chain teams. • Prepare engineering calculations, design reports, specifications, drawings, and engineering change packages. • Support licensing activities including safety analysis reports, technical specifications, topical reports, and other regulatory documentation. • Participate in design reviews and milestone assessments to verify design completeness and compliance. • Support continuous improvement initiatives and application of nuclear industry best practices.

Required Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline. • 6+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience for Level 10. • 10+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience for Level 11. • Advanced degree may be considered in lieu of a portion of required experience. • Experience designing complex mechanical systems, pressure vessels, or multidisciplinary engineered systems. • Strong understanding of configuration management principles and design control processes. • Experience supporting engineering activities under quality programs such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001. • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills. • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. • Ability to work independently and effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams. • Ability to manage competing technical priorities and multiple concurrent assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with commercial nuclear reactor systems or advanced reactor technologies. • Experience with high-temperature pressure vessels or related mechanical systems. • Experience developing technical documentation supporting system architecture and design. • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required. • Familiarity with nuclear licensing processes and regulatory requirements. • Experience working with supplier oversight and technical integration activities.

The successful candidate will possess strong technical leadership skills, demonstrate a commitment to engineering excellence, and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced engineering environment.
