What is a remote mechanical design SolidWorks engineer?

A Remote Mechanical Design SolidWorks Engineer is a professional who uses SolidWorks, a popular 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software, to create, modify, and analyze mechanical designs from a remote location. Their responsibilities include developing 3D models, preparing detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with teams virtually to ensure products meet technical and functional requirements. Working remotely, they may participate in video meetings, share digital files, and use cloud-based tools to streamline the design process. This role is vital for companies seeking skilled mechanical designers who can contribute from anywhere, increasing flexibility and access to talent.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical design SolidWorks engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Design SolidWorks Engineer, you need strong mechanical engineering knowledge, proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, and a degree in engineering or a related field. Mastery of SolidWorks software is essential, and certifications like CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills set top professionals apart, especially in remote environments. These competencies ensure precise and innovative product designs, efficient project delivery, and effective collaboration with distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote mechanical design SolidWorks professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Mechanical Design SolidWorks professionals often encounter challenges such as effective communication with cross-functional teams, managing file versions, and ensuring design integrity without in-person collaboration. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize cloud-based collaboration tools, and follow standardized file management procedures. Regular virtual meetings and thorough documentation can also help maintain project alignment and reduce misunderstandings.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Designer will develop detailed mechanical design models, drawings, and fabrication-ready documentation for custom equipment and high-temperature process systems. This role requires strong SolidWorks capability, practical design-for-manufacturability experience, and the ability to work closely with engineers, fabricators, and project teams to convert technical concepts into buildable designs.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain detailed SolidWorks models, assemblies, drawings, bills of material, and fabrication documentation for custom mechanical equipment.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability principles to support practical fabrication, inspection, assembly, installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Support design development for high-temperature equipment, molten salt systems, furnace components, fixtures, piping interfaces, and related mechanical assemblies.
  • Coordinate design details with mechanical engineers, piping engineers, electrical engineers, controls staff, procurement, vendors, and fabrication personnel.
  • Revise drawings and models based on design reviews, constructability feedback, vendor input, field changes, and configuration-controlled updates.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation in accordance with project quality, safety, document control, and configuration management expectations.

Requirements

  • Advanced SolidWorks experience, including complex assemblies, detailed part modeling, fabrication drawings, drawing standards, and bills of material.
  • Substantial design-for-manufacturability experience with custom equipment, fabricated assemblies, industrial systems, or process equipment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering direction, calculations, sketches, specifications, and technical requirements and convert them into accurate design deliverables.
  • Experience coordinating design details with engineers, fabricators, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation quality, revision control, and practical fabrication/assembly considerations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High-temperature equipment design experience, including molten salt systems, furnace components, thermal equipment, specialty materials, or insulated assemblies.
  • Experience supporting DOE, NNSA, nuclear, advanced energy, chemical processing, manufacturing, or highly regulated technical projects.
  • Experience with drawing checking, tolerance review, weldments, sheet metal, machined parts, piping interfaces, or vendor fabrication packages.

Education and Experience

Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent training in mechanical design, drafting, CAD, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and directly relevant SolidWorks/mechanical design experience may be considered.

Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.
