What is remote mathematical modeling?

Remote mathematical modeling involves using mathematical equations and computational methods to represent real-world systems or processes, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment. Professionals in this field use tools like MATLAB, Python, or R to develop and analyze models for industries such as finance, engineering, healthcare, and environmental science. The remote aspect allows for flexible collaboration with teams worldwide through digital communication platforms. This role typically requires strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in mathematical software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mathematical modeler?

To thrive as a Remote Mathematical Modeler, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computational modeling, typically supported by a relevant degree such as mathematics, engineering, or physics. Proficiency with technical tools like MATLAB, R, Python, and specialized modeling software, as well as experience with data analysis and simulation platforms, is essential. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective written communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for developing accurate models, interpreting complex data remotely, and delivering clear insights to clients or stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by remote mathematical modelers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote mathematical modelers often encounter challenges such as limited real-time collaboration with colleagues, potential miscommunication regarding model requirements, and managing complex data sets independently. These can be addressed by utilizing collaborative tools like shared code repositories, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation practices. Additionally, proactively seeking feedback and maintaining open channels of communication with stakeholders can help ensure alignment and successful project outcomes.

Job description

About the role and team

Working in Science at Uber means solving complex, real-world problems that don't always have a textbook solution. You will be part of a team that turns massive amounts of data into actionable insights, influencing everything from marketplace efficiency to user experience. In this role, you'll be a technical "detective," unpicking data-driven puzzles in a high-stakes, fast-moving environment. You'll thrive here if you stay calm under pressure, embrace the "messy" reality of imperfect datasets, and have the grit to move projects from hypothesis to production.

This is a role for an owner who is energized by the challenge of building at scale. You will navigate the ambiguity of shifting priorities and internal complexity, ensuring that our data-driven products are robust, reliable, and grounded in sound statistical principles. If you're sharp, steady, and motivated by meaningful impact at global scale this is where you'll grow.
Rate of Pay:                 $161,000 to $197,000 per Year
You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits. More details can be found at the following link https://www.uber.com/careers/benefits.
What you'll do

  • Leverage data to perform intensive analysis across all areas of business to drive product development.
  • Design experiments and analyze results to draw conclusions.
  • Perform time-series analyses to statistically assess relative impact and extract trends.
  • Build models to enhance understanding of user behavior and predict future performance of cohorts.
  • Create dashboards and reports to regularly communicate results and monitor key metrics.
  • Extract data from warehouse, back-test the model, and compare the model performance and communicate the results.
  • Develop end-to-end solutions to abstract business and engineering problems related to funnel optimization, user engagement, and user experience.
  • May telecommute.

Basic Qualifications

  • Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (any), Information Technology, Information Management, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or related field and 1 year of experience in the job offered or in a related occupation.
  • Position requires:
    • R or Python;
    • Database query languages: SQL;
    • Experimentation techniques including simulation or A/B testing;
      • Statistical analysis including descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, or confidence intervals;
        Developing relevant metrics;
    • KPIs to measure performance by teams using SQL, R, or Python;
    • Quantitative modeling including machine learning models, time-series forecasting, or causal impact analyses;
    • Data visualization and dashboarding: R, Python or Tableau.

Ready to Ride?

This isn't the kind of place where you follow a playbook - it's where you help write one. If you're driven by impact, energized by challenge, and ready to shape how the world moves - we'd love to hear from you.

You may be eligible for bonuses, equity, and other compensation, as well as a range of benefits. Explore our benefits.
