Job description

Since 1981, Harris Miller Miller & Hanson Inc. (HMMH) has been a trusted leader in studying, assessing, and mitigating the environmental impacts of transportation projects across aviation, highway, rail, transit, industrial, construction, military, recreational, and entertainment sectors. Our Aviation Environmental & Sustainability Group specializes in analyzing and resolving airport environmental challenges, supporting over 200 airports worldwide with noise and air quality studies, sustainability plans, mitigation strategies, environmental documentation, public engagement, and regulatory compliance.

We are seeking a Principal Consultant to join our Aviation Environmental & Sustainability group in a remote or hybrid position in the United States.

As a Principal Consultant specializing in the FAAโ€™s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT), you will serve as a recognized technical and strategic leader in aviation environmental analysis. Your focus will be on managing an AEDT modeling team, Part 150 noise compatibility planning, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) initiatives. You will leverage your expertise to manage technically and procedurally complex projects, mentor staff, lead business development, and enhance HMMHโ€™s visibility and impact in the aviation environmental field. Occasional travel for client meetings, conferences, or on-site project meetings is expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead AEDT-based noise and air quality analyses, ensuring technical rigor, accuracy, and regulatory compliance, including developing model inputs, flight track data, and noise contour generation.

  • Provide high-level technical guidance and strategic direction for projects integrating AEDT, Part 150, and AAM, aligning technical solutions with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage large and complex projects from start to finish, overseeing scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk management while delegating responsibilities to optimize team performance.
  • Mentor and coach Project Managers and Senior Project Managers on technical execution, project management best practices, and business development strategies.
  • Supervise subconsultants and coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality deliverables and cohesive project execution.
  • Build and maintain long-term client relationships, engaging directly to identify technical needs, project opportunities, and business development potential.
  • Generate new projects in established markets and expand HMMHโ€™s presence in emerging areas related to AEDT, Part 150, and AAM.
  • Prepare, review, and present advanced technical reports, proposals, and deliverables that communicate complex information effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Represent HMMH externally through professional presentations, technical papers, publications, and participation in industry committees or conferences.
  • Lead or contribute to corporate initiatives such as developing AEDT training materials, enhancing modeling workflows, and mentoring staff to strengthen organizational expertise.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support team and company goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or higher in a technical field (e.g., aerospace/aviation, engineering, environmental sciences, physics, math, or related disciplines).
  • 12 or more years of experience in environmental modeling, with recognized expertise in AEDT for noise and air quality analyses.
  • Demonstrated experience managing technically and procedurally complex projects from initiation through completion.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, mentor staff, supervise subconsultants, and manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and client satisfaction.
  • Proficiency in Part 150, and AAM modeling, planning, or assessment, including practical application in consulting or aviation projects.
  • Strong record of business development and maintaining long-term client relationships.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing high-quality technical reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Active engagement in the professional community through presentations, publications, or participation in technical committees.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for client meetings, conferences, or on-site project meetings.
