Remote Marking Assistant information

What is a remote marking assistant?

Remote Marking Assistants are professionals who evaluate and grade student assignments, exams, or assessments from a remote location. They typically work for educational institutions, online learning platforms, or examination boards. Their responsibilities include reviewing submitted work, providing feedback, ensuring grading consistency, and sometimes entering grades into digital systems. This role often requires a strong understanding of the subject matter and attention to detail. Remote Marking Assistants help maintain academic standards while offering flexibility for both institutions and staff.

How do remote marking assistants typically collaborate with instructors and other team members despite working remotely?

Remote Marking Assistants usually communicate with instructors and academic teams through digital platforms such as email, learning management systems, and video meetings. Regular check-ins and clear guidelines are common to ensure consistency in grading and feedback. Effective collaboration relies on prompt communication, sharing updates about marking progress, and clarifying expectations or marking criteria. Many institutions also provide virtual training sessions and online forums to help remote assistants stay connected and supported within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote marking assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Marking Assistant, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a relevant academic background, often supported by a degree or coursework in the subject area. Familiarity with online learning platforms, grading systems, and document management tools such as LMS (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) is typically required. Excellent written communication, time management, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure accurate, timely, and fair assessments in a virtual educational environment.

Job description

This is a remote position.

About The Firm

Our client is a well-established accounting firm with a long history of serving nonprofit organizations. They combine the personal attention of a small practice with the technical depth of a larger firm, providing high-quality review and advisory services to mission-driven clients. The team values collaboration, precision, and balance, offering a supportive environment for professionals who want meaningful work without the grind of traditional public accounting.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Preparer to join their Review Team, supporting nonprofit engagements. This is a hands-on role that goes well beyond checklist completion. The right candidate has been involved in the substantive side of review and audit work, not just organizing workpapers or marking up templates. You should be comfortable performing analytical procedures, identifying issues in financial data, and understanding what the numbers actually mean.

This role is ideal for someone from a smaller firm where staff are expected to roll up their sleeves and engage with the work directly.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with review and compilation engagements for nonprofit organizations.

  • Perform analytical procedures and identify accounting and reporting issues in financial statements and supporting schedules.

  • Prepare and organize workpapers, schedules, and supporting documentation with accuracy and clear tie-outs.

  • Apply firm methodology and best practices through Knowledge Coach templates and checklists.

  • Engage substantively with client data, including revenue and expense analysis, balance sheet review, and identification of inconsistencies or areas requiring follow-up.

  • Collaborate with team members and managers to ensure timely, accurate completion of engagements.

  • Engage directly with clients on a regular basis

  • Maintain compliance with professional standards and firm policies.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.

  • 4-10 years of public accounting experience, ideally within a smaller firm where direct involvement in substantive work was expected.

  • Demonstrated experience performing analytical procedures and engaging with the actual data, not solely checklist-driven tasks.

  • Strong background in nonprofit accounting and financial statement preparation.

  • Ability to understand and work through bank reconciliations, payroll analysis, and similar foundational review procedures.

  • A track record that shows you've developed judgment, not just familiarity, with review and compilation work.

  • Experience with Knowledge Coach and Profx Engagement preferred.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-motivated, dependable, and comfortable in a remote, collaborative setting.

Benefits
  • Competitive compensation based on experience.

  • Full single health coverage.

  • 401(k) match and employer-paid supplemental insurance plan (Aflac-style).

  • Flexible, remote schedule and a culture that values balance and professional respect.
