What does a remote Linux administrator do?

A Remote Linux Administrator is responsible for managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux-based systems and servers from a remote location. They ensure that systems are secure, updated, and running efficiently by performing tasks such as software installations, system monitoring, backups, and patch management. These professionals also handle user permissions, resolve technical issues, and support system upgrades, often collaborating with other IT staff to deliver reliable infrastructure solutions.

What does a remote Linux administrator do?

As a remote Linux administrator, your duties and responsibilities are to install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot a system, server, or application that runs on the Linux operating system. There are many different Linux OSs, and some of the more common ones are Ubuntu, Mint, and Debian. In addition to maintaining the server and system, you also carry out routine security checks and work with other specialists to improve security and contingency plans for maintaining operations in case of emergency. Linux administrators also provide training and instruction to end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Linux administrator?

To excel as a Remote Linux Administrator, you need strong expertise in Linux server management, scripting (such as Bash or Python), and a solid understanding of networking and security principles, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like RHCE or CompTIA Linux+. Familiarity with tools such as SSH, Ansible, Docker, and monitoring systems is commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are vital soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure reliable system operations, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration in distributed IT environments.

How does a remote Linux administrator typically collaborate with other IT teams and stakeholders?

As a Remote Linux Administrator, collaboration with other IT teams is primarily facilitated through digital communication tools such as Slack, email, and ticketing systems. You’ll regularly interact with developers, network engineers, and support staff to troubleshoot issues, deploy updates, and ensure system stability. Clear documentation and effective communication are crucial, as you may need to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders or coordinate across different time zones. Team meetings, virtual stand-ups, and shared project management platforms are common practices in remote environments, helping maintain alignment and workflow efficiency.

What is the difference between Remote Linux Administrator vs Remote Network Administrator?

MUST BE A US CITIZEN

Senior Storage Engineer (NetApp & Azure NetApp Files)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Storage Engineer to lead the architecture, design, implementation, and operational support of enterprise storage platforms across both on-premises and Microsoft Azure environments. This position is intended for a senior-level technical expert capable of independently designing, deploying, and optimizing complex storage solutions with minimal oversight.

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience with NetApp ONTAP and Azure NetApp Files (ANF), understands enterprise infrastructure architecture, and can translate business and technical requirements into scalable, secure, and highly available storage solutions. This individual will serve as a technical leader, provide architectural guidance, mentor junior engineers when needed, and drive engineering best practices across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, architect, implement, and support enterprise NetApp storage solutions for mission-critical workloads.
  • Design and implement Azure NetApp Files (ANF) solutions following Microsoft and NetApp architectural best practices.
  • Develop scalable storage architectures supporting high availability, disaster recovery, performance optimization, and business continuity.
  • Lead storage modernization initiatives, including migration of workloads from traditional on-premises storage to Azure NetApp Files.
  • Design storage networking, capacity planning, replication strategies, backup integration, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Configure and manage NetApp ONTAP clusters, Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs), aggregates, volumes, snapshots, SnapMirror, SnapVault, and related technologies.
  • Perform advanced performance analysis and troubleshooting across storage, networking, virtualization, and operating system layers.
  • Administer storage using both NetApp System Manager and the ONTAP CLI.
  • Develop automation where appropriate using PowerShell, Bash, REST APIs, or Infrastructure-as-Code methodologies.
  • Create and maintain engineering standards, architecture diagrams, operational procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in architectural reviews and provide technical recommendations for enterprise infrastructure initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Azure architects, Linux administrators, Windows engineers, database administrators, virtualization teams, and cybersecurity personnel.
  • Provide Tier III/IV engineering support for complex production issues.
  • Evaluate emerging storage technologies and recommend improvements that enhance reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of enterprise storage engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on NetApp ONTAP administration and architecture.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Azure NetApp Files (ANF) engineering and architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience designing enterprise storage architectures from concept through production implementation.
  • Expert knowledge of NetApp ONTAP architecture and administration.
  • Extensive experience with storage replication, snapshots, cloning, disaster recovery, and data protection strategies.
  • Strong Linux administration experience, including command-line management, storage provisioning, file systems, permissions, and performance analysis.
  • Experience administering enterprise storage using the NetApp ONTAP CLI and management interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of NFS, SMB/CIFS, iSCSI, and enterprise storage protocols.
  • Experience supporting VMware, Hyper-V, Kubernetes, or enterprise virtualization platforms.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills across storage, operating systems, networking, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to produce architecture documentation, technical designs, implementation plans, and operational procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure Arc
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, or similar)
  • Experience with automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or REST APIs
  • Experience supporting SQL Server, Oracle, SAP, or other enterprise applications hosted on NetApp storage
  • Familiarity with enterprise backup platforms such as Commvault, Veeam, or Rubrik

Professional Competencies

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Strong initiative and ownership of assigned projects from design through implementation.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make sound engineering decisions in complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and executive audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and influence architectural direction.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to engineering excellence, documentation, and operational discipline.

Preferred Candidate Profile

This role is intended for a senior engineer—not an entry-level administrator. The successful candidate will be a recognized technical expert who:

  • Requires minimal guidance or day-to-day direction.
  • Is a self-starter who proactively identifies problems and develops solutions.
  • Can independently architect, implement, and support complex enterprise storage environments.
  • Is comfortable making technical recommendations and defending architectural decisions.
  • Takes ownership of projects and follows them through completion.
  • Continuously evaluates new technologies and recommends improvements aligned with organizational goals.
  • Serves as a trusted technical advisor for enterprise storage strategy.
