What is remote legacy modernization?

Remote legacy modernization refers to the process of updating and improving older, outdated software systems (often called 'legacy systems') to more modern platforms, tools, or architectures, all while working remotely. This can include migrating applications to the cloud, refactoring code, or integrating with newer technologies. The goal is to enhance performance, security, and scalability without disrupting business operations. Remote teams use collaboration tools and cloud-based environments to plan and execute these projects efficiently. Modernizing legacy systems helps organizations stay competitive and reduces risks associated with obsolete technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote legacy modernization specialist?

To excel as a Remote Legacy Modernization Specialist, you need strong expertise in legacy systems, software development, and system integration, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with mainframe platforms, cloud migration tools, and certifications like AWS or Azure are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and clear communication are crucial for collaborating remotely with diverse teams and stakeholders. These abilities are essential for successfully transforming outdated systems into modern, efficient solutions while minimizing business disruption.

What are some common challenges faced when working in remote legacy modernization projects, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote legacy modernization is coordinating across distributed teams while dealing with outdated systems and documentation gaps. Communication issues and time zone differences can slow progress, especially when troubleshooting legacy code or integrating new solutions. To address these challenges, teams often rely on collaborative tools, frequent virtual check-ins, and thorough documentation practices. Building strong cross-functional relationships and adopting agile methodologies can also help streamline processes and ensure alignment throughout the project.

Project Manager - Application Modernization & Test Environment Transformation

Work Requirement: 100% Remote

Initial Contract Duration: 5 Months

PMO - Infrastructure oriented project

Modern Test Environments

Program - Application Workstream

Business Drivers/Customer Impact - Building a new test environment - This will help the client mitigate risk with their application stack.

Overview
  • TEKsystems is seeking a highly driven Project Manager to lead the Application Workstream within a large-scale Modern Test Environments Program.
  • This high-impact initiative is focused on transforming legacy, highly manual application test environments into modern, scalable, and automated Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) platforms.
  • This role is ideal for a hands-on Project Manager or Program Manager who thrives in complex technical environments, can effectively influence stakeholders without direct authority, and has experience driving application modernization, migration, or infrastructure transformation initiatives.
Why This Opportunity?
  • You'll play a key role in helping an enterprise organization modernize its application testing ecosystem, reduce operational risk, and accelerate software delivery capabilities. This is a strategic initiative with significant visibility and business impact.
What You'll Do
  • Lead project management activities for the Application Workstream within a major modernization program.
  • Partner with application owners, architects, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and align priorities.
  • Facilitate discovery sessions to identify application dependencies, migration requirements, and onboarding considerations.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, timelines, risks, issues, and dependency tracking.
  • Coordinate migration readiness efforts across multiple application teams.
  • Drive execution through design, planning, migration, testing, and implementation phases.
  • Manage complex interdependencies across application, engineering, and infrastructure teams.
  • Track work and dependencies using Azure DevOps (ADO) or similar tools.
  • Support roadmap planning, sprint alignment, and stakeholder communications.
  • Provide executive-level status reporting, issue escalation, and ongoing program updates.
  • Ensure successful onboarding of applications into newly developed test environments.
Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience leading an Application Workstream within a large-scale modernization or transformation program.
  • Experience overseeing multiple parallel projects or workstreams.
  • 7+ years of Project Management experience supporting enterprise technology initiatives.
  • Strong experience managing application migration, modernization, cloud migration, platform migration, or infrastructure transformation efforts.
  • Experience working directly with software development and infrastructure teams.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Proven success managing complex dependencies across multiple teams and organizations.
  • Experience operating in Agile and hybrid Agile/Waterfall environments.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps (ADO) or similar project management and work tracking tools.
  • Strong understanding of application architecture, SDLC, test environments, and technical delivery processes.
  • Program Management experience across multiple enterprise initiatives.
  • Financial services, banking, or credit union experience.
  • Exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) initiatives.
  • Experience supporting cloud-native transformation programs.
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms and infrastructure automation.
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is a proactive leader who:

  • Can navigate ambiguity and organizational complexity.
  • Excels at driving execution and accountability.
  • Builds strong relationships across technical and business teams.
  • Effectively influences stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Is willing to roll up their sleeves and actively lead delivery rather than provide administrative PMO support.
  • Demonstrates exceptional follow-through, communication, and execution discipline.
Tools & Environment
  • Azure DevOps (ADO)
  • Agile / Scrum Methodologies
  • Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) Concepts
  • Enterprise Application Ecosystems
  • Modern Test Environment Platforms
