As a Sr Data Engineer on the Optum Serve team, you will be accountable for the entire data engineering lifecycle-including research, proof of concepts, architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. You will design, develop, and implement cross-domain, scalable, and secure data solutions that support critical health services for our federal, military, and state partners. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Take accountability for the entire data engineering lifecycle, including research, proof of concepts, architecture, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
  • Design, develop, implement, and run cross-domain, modular, flexible, scalable, secure, reliable, and high-quality data solutions that transform data for meaningful analyses and analytics while ensuring operability
  • Design, develop, implement, and run data solutions that improve data efficiency, reliability, and quality, ensuring they are performant by design
  • Layer in instrumentation in the development process so that data pipelines can be monitored, using measurements to detect internal problems before they result in user-visible outages or data quality issues
  • Build processes and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot, maintain, and optimize solutions, and rapidly respond to customer and production issues
  • Embrace continuous learning of engineering practices to ensure industry-best practices and technology adoption, including DevOps, Cloud, and Agile methodologies
  • Drive technical debt reduction and technical transformations, including open source adoption, cloud adoption, and HCP assessment and adoption
  • Contribute to enterprise inner-source and industry communities, striving to reuse and share components wherever possible across the organization
  • Maintain high-quality documentation of data definitions, transformations, and processes to ensure robust data governance and security

Required Qualifications:

  • 8 years of overall experience in software engineering and data engineering roles, with significant experience designing and delivering large-scale data platforms in enterprise environments
  • 5 years of experience with SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL database administration
  • 3 years of experience with database performance tuning and/or pipelines
  • 3 years of experience with database and/or enterprise monitoring software
  • 1 years of experience with Public Cloud Engineering (Azure preferred)
  • Solid hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms (Azure and/or GCP), including data storage, processing, orchestration, and monitoring services
  • United States Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related technical field, OR equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working within the healthcare industry or supporting government/military health programs (Optum Serve)
  • Experience contributing to internal or external open-source engineering communities
  • Excellent technical writing skills with experience documenting complex data definitions and governance standards
  • Proven track record of successful cloud migration (specifically to Azure or GCP)
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development thinking

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
