What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Knowledge Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Knowledge Engineer, you generally need expertise in knowledge management, ontologies, data modeling, and a relevant degree in computer science or information science. Familiarity with technical tools such as semantic web technologies (e.g., RDF, OWL), knowledge graph platforms, and query languages like SPARQL is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams and translating complex information. These skills ensure the creation, organization, and optimization of knowledge systems that support informed decision-making and efficient remote operations.

How does a Remote Knowledge Engineer typically collaborate with subject matter experts and development teams?

As a Remote Knowledge Engineer, you will frequently interact with subject matter experts (SMEs) to extract, structure, and validate knowledge for use in AI systems or knowledge bases. Collaboration is often conducted through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools. You’ll also work closely with developers to integrate structured knowledge into systems and ensure accuracy. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex concepts into structured data formats are key to success in this remote, cross-functional environment.

Job description

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, a leading global law firm with offices in major commercial, legal, and governmental hubs worldwide, is seeking a Knowledge Solutions Senior Developer to join our Knowledge Solutions team.

Join a small, high-impact engineering team where your work directly shapes how attorneys and business professionals access knowledge and interact with emerging AI-driven solutions across the firm. You'll own meaningful front-end architecture decisions, shape modern React experiences, and help define how AI capabilities are surfaced through intuitive, high-quality user interfaces.

If you enjoy autonomy, clean design, and building real products (not just tickets), this role is designed for you.

This position will reside in our Philadelphia office with a hybrid in-office/remote working schedule.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building modern front-end applications that power internal tools, knowledge systems, and AI-driven solutions

  • Developing user interfaces for AI-enabled applications, including search, summarization, and intelligent workflows

  • Creating search-driven experiences backed by platforms such as Azure AI Search and other data services

  • Building SPFx web parts that support the firm's intranet and knowledge ecosystem

  • Improving performance, usability, and maintainability of existing applications

What you'll do:

  • Design and build modern, scalable front-end applications using React, TypeScript, and modern web frameworks.

  • Turn Figma designs into fast, accessible, production-quality UI.

  • Own front-end architecture and make key technical decisions with minimal oversight.

  • Build user experiences for AI-driven features such as search, recommendations, and data-rich interfaces.

  • Collaborate with backend developers to integrate REST and GraphQL APIs, using schema-driven development and code generation.

  • Build with quality by default: strong unit test coverage (Jest, React Testing Library).

  • Implement feature flags to enable safe releases, experimentation, and iterative delivery.

  • Write code that is testable, observable, and designed for long-term maintainability.

  • Write and maintain clean, CI/CD-ready code that supports automated testing and seamless deployment processes.

  • Integrate applications with Azure App Insights for monitoring and observability.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across UI and integration layers.

  • Ensure adherence to security, accessibility (WCAG), and performance best practices.

How you'll work:

  • High autonomy with real ownership of features end-to-end

  • Close collaboration with a small, experienced team (no heavy bureaucracy)

  • Pragmatic engineering: the right tools, not just trendy ones

  • We favor simple, modern solutions over legacy-heavy approaches where possible

  • Continuous improvement mindset around code quality, performance, and developer experience

Modern development & AI tooling:

  • Actively use AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Codex-based tools, etc.) to accelerate development

  • Apply strong judgment to validate and refine AI-generated code

  • Help evolve team practices around developer productivity and tooling

Experience and qualifications:

  • 6-8+ years of front-end development experience

  • Deep expertise in JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and modern CSS

  • Experience building production-grade, user-facing applications

  • Strong experience with GraphQL and client-side integration patterns

  • Experience using GraphQL code generation tools

  • Solid understanding of API integration and data flow

  • Experience working in collaborative Git environments

  • Comfort working in Agile teams

Nice to have:

  • Experience with SPFx / SharePoint Online

  • Familiarity with feature flagging tools (LaunchDarkly, Azure App Configuration, etc.)

  • Experience building or contributing to design systems or component libraries

  • Exposure to performance tuning and front-end observability

  • Familiarity with authentication patterns (OAuth, MSAL)

  • Experience with modern build tools such as Vite

  • Familiarity with Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) and integrating low-code solutions with custom-built applications

What sets you apart:

  • You take pride in writing clean, testable, maintainable code

  • You're a fast, independent learner who picks up new tools quickly

  • You care about user experience, not just functionality

  • You're comfortable owning problems and driving them to resolution

  • You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What you'll get:

  • High-impact work used by attorneys and business professionals across the firm

  • Autonomy and trust to make technical decisions

  • Opportunity to shape front-end standards and tooling

  • A collaborative team that values quality over process
