Job description

ABOUT

We run a small software studio in California. We build custom software for US businesses: inventory sync tools, internal dashboards, AI features and integrations.

We have data on small business prospective clients that want our services, and we reach out to them. Some are warmer than others, and all need closing.

SCOPE OF WORK

  • Work conversations with US business owners, primarily by video call and text message
  • Understand what they want built, in plain language, and explain how we would approach it
  • Move a prospect to a small initial paid project, payable only on delivery, then to a larger build
  • Own the client relationship after the sale. Account management is a core part of this role, not an afterthought: you stay the point of contact, keep the client informed through delivery, handle questions, and bring back repeat and expanded work
  • Work our existing backlog of leads that need a human touch
  • Maintain clear notes on every conversation and account

You will not write code. An AI assistant is available on screen to supply technical answers, along with written notes on every offer and price we have.

THIS IS NOT A COMMISSION-ONLY ROLE

You are paid an hourly rate from your first hour, whether or not anything closes. Commission is paid on top of that, not instead of it.

If you have done commission-only work before, that background is exactly what we are looking for, and this is the opposite arrangement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

At least one year of prior sales experience is required. Any of the following qualifies:

  • Direct sales and demo work. Cutco or Vector Marketing, Southwestern Advantage, Kirby and similar programs
  • Summer or door-to-door sales. Vivint, Aptive, solar, pest control, home services
  • Commission-only or 1099 sales of any kind, including insurance. Primerica, Family First Life, American Income Life and similar
  • High-ticket closing or appointment setting over Zoom
  • SDR, BDR, inside sales, account executive or account management work at any company
  • Client-facing or customer success work where you kept the relationship, not just opened it
  • Retail or hospitality where you actually sold, rather than rang people up

If you have run demos over video, handled objections live, or worked a season where you were only paid when you closed, you already have the hard part of this job.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Clear written English in a normal, conversational register. We text people like people: short and direct, no "I hope this message finds you well"
  • Comfort on camera with someone you have not met
  • Located in the United States, available during US business hours
  • Consistency. You set your own schedule, and you keep to what you commit to
  • Curiosity. You do not need to be technical. You need to be someone who reads how a thing works and can explain it back to someone who doesn't

WHAT YOU DON'T NEED

  • A degree
  • A technical background
  • Your own leads. We generate them
  • Any licence, kit, deposit or purchase. There is nothing to buy and no one to recruit

A REAL PLUS

If you have used Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or anything similar, even casually on a side project, mention it. It is not a requirement and you will not be writing code. It tells us you are someone who goes and figures things out, and that is most of this work.

COMPENSATION

  • Base rate: $20 to $25 per hour, depending on experience
  • Commission: Performance commission paid on top of your hourly rate. Structure to be discussed and agreed in writing
  • On-target: Base plus commission is intended to put total earnings in the $40 per hour range
  • Initial term: A paid first week, billed at your agreed rate, paid whether or not the engagement continues
  • Invoicing: Twice monthly, net terms by agreement

Rate and commission structure are open to discussion for the right person.

ENGAGEMENT TERMS

  • This is an independent contractor engagement (1099). It is not employment and does not include employee benefits
  • You control how the work gets done. Methods, tools and daily schedule are yours to set, provided you are reachable during US business hours when the leads are
  • Scripts, call recordings, pricing notes and the AI assistant are resources made available to you, not required methods
  • You supply your own computer and internet connection
  • The engagement is non-exclusive. You are free to contract with other clients
  • You are responsible for your own taxes, insurance and any applicable licences
  • Term, hours and scope are set by written agreement and are open to discussion
