Digital Solutions Practice

Michael Baker International's Digital Solutions practice designs, builds, and operates the cloud, data, and technology platforms that enable MBI's mission-critical engineering and consulting work. With expertise spanning multi-cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, application delivery, and AI/ML enablement, the Digital Solutions team drives the digital transformation of MBI's internal and client-facing capabilities in support of the company's Vision 2030 strategic roadmap. The practice supports a broad portfolio of engineering disciplines-transportation, infrastructure, water, environment, and federal services-by delivering scalable, secure, and resilient technology foundations that accelerate project delivery and operational excellence. Guided by principles of automation, infrastructure as code, and DevOps best practices, Digital Solutions maintains a modern technology environment that supports thousands of professionals across the enterprise and positions MBI as a technology-forward leader in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.

What We're Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer to join our Digital Solutions team in a fully remote capacity. In this hands-on senior role, you will design, build, and maintain MBI's enterprise cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, reporting directly to the CTO and collaborating with the VP of Product, VP of Infrastructure, and CISO to align cloud platforms with product delivery, operational reliability, and security compliance. You will play a pivotal role in advancing MBI's Vision 2030 digital transformation strategy-driving CI/CD automation, Infrastructure as Code practices, AI/ML infrastructure enablement, and platform engineering across the enterprise.

What You'll Do

  • Design and implement enterprise-scale multi-cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and AWS, with a focus on Azure as the primary platform, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and performance for all environments and services.
  • Develop and deploy Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform as the primary tool, with proficiency in ARM/Bicep and AWS CloudFormation to standardize cloud provisioning, enforce configuration governance, and enable repeatable, version-controlled deployments.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and GitHub as the primary version control system to automate build, test, and deployment processes aligned with product delivery timelines.
  • Establish comprehensive monitoring, observability, and incident response capabilities using Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Datadog, and Prometheus to uphold enterprise SLAs, detect anomalies, and drive continuous reliability improvement.
  • Manage Azure infrastructure fundamentals including subscriptions, tenants, VNets, VWAN, Network Security Groups, and firewalls to establish secure, scalable, and compliant cloud foundations.
  • Drive cloud cost optimization through FinOps practices-leveraging Azure Cost Management and AWS Cost Explorer to right-size resources, implement governance frameworks, and eliminate waste across the enterprise.
  • Enforce security and compliance standards across cloud environments in partnership with the CISO, implementing IAM controls, network segmentation, encryption, and zero-trust architecture aligned with SOC 2, FedRAMP, and CMMC requirements.
  • Serve as MBI's primary technical liaison with Microsoft Azure and AWS-managing vendor partnerships, coordinating architecture reviews, and aligning the cloud roadmap with provider capabilities and strategic initiatives.
  • Write automation scripts and tools in Python, Bash, or PowerShell to streamline infrastructure deployment, system integration, and DevOps workflows.

What You Need to Succeed

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and managing cloud infrastructure in production environments across both Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Deep expertise in Infrastructure as Code including Terraform, Azure Resource Manager/Bicep, and AWS CloudFormation, with demonstrated proficiency in modular design, state management, and environment promotion strategies
  • Proficiency in CI/CD pipeline development and maintenance using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline
  • Strong scripting and coding abilities in Python, Bash, and PowerShell for automation, system integration, and DevOps workflow development
  • Proven experience with cloud security implementation including IAM, zero-trust architecture, network segmentation, and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, CMMC, FedRAMP)
  • Experience with cloud cost management, FinOps practices, and cloud governance frameworks at enterprise scale
  • Proficiency with monitoring and observability tools including Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders including CTO-level executives
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with Kubernetes (AKS, EKS), Docker, and container orchestration in production environments
  • Preferred: Experience building and managing cloud infrastructure for AI/ML workloads including GPU compute, vector databases, and model serving pipelines
  • Preferred: Experience with platform engineering practices and internal developer platform (IDP) development
  • Preferred: Professional certifications in AWS (Solutions Architect Professional), Microsoft Azure (Solutions Architect Expert), or HashiCorp (Terraform Associate)

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience migrating infrastructure and workloads from AWS to Azure.
  • Experience with PowerShell, Ansible, or other infrastructure automation frameworks.
  • Expertise in Kubernetes (AKS, EKS) and Docker container orchestration in production environments.
  • Experience building and managing cloud infrastructure for AI/ML workloads including GPU compute, vector databases, and model serving pipelines.
  • Professional certifications in AWS (Solutions Architect Professional), Microsoft Azure (Solutions Architect Expert), or HashiCorp (Terraform Associate).
  • Experience with cloud cost management, FinOps practices, and governance frameworks at enterprise scale.
