Remote Interconnection information

How does a Remote Interconnection specialist typically collaborate with other teams to ensure seamless network connectivity?

A Remote Interconnection specialist often works closely with network engineering, data center operations, and cloud services teams to coordinate the setup and maintenance of interconnection points. This collaboration involves regular communication to troubleshoot connectivity issues, align on technical requirements, and schedule upgrades or maintenance without disrupting services. Effective teamwork is essential for ensuring that data flows smoothly between remote sites, cloud providers, and partners. Professionals in this role should be comfortable working across time zones and using collaboration tools to stay connected with distributed teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Interconnection Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Interconnection Specialist, you need a solid understanding of network engineering, telecommunications protocols, and interconnection standards, often supported by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as network monitoring systems, BGP routing, and relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating with remote teams and managing complex technical issues. These competencies ensure reliable connectivity, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration across interconnected networks.

Job description

The Interconnection Engineer is responsible for managing solar, storage and hybrid projects through the RTO/utility interconnection process through all stages of the project life cycle. This role requires an engineer with experience managing Generation Interconnection projects through multiple utility and RTO interconnection processes. This is a multi-faceted role that offers a lot of growth opportunity to offer strategic direction to a rapidly growing team and renewable pipeline for Sol Systems. The candidate will report to the VP, Transmission Strategy and be an integral member of Development team.

Sol Systems is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) committed to building, owning, and managing clean energy infrastructure that benefits local communities. With GWs of projects across 30 states, Sol integrates energy storage and grid resiliency solutions to deliver reliable, sustainable power to Fortune 500 companies, municipalities, utilities, and schools. Through strategic partnerships and community reinvestment, Sol ensures clean energy development drives long-term economic and environmental benefits. Founded in 2008 and led by its founder, Sol Systems is dedicated to shaping an energy future we can all believe in.ย

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with the Development Operations, Enterprise, Engineering, Pre-Construction, Construction, and Asset Management teams to successfully deliver utility-scale generation projects through the interconnection process.
  • Manage Sol's interconnection queue positions, including preparing and maintaining interconnection applications, modeling packages, and supporting documentation while coordinating with utilities and RTOs to satisfy interconnection requirements.
  • Manage external consultants responsible for electrical modeling, interconnection studies, curtailment assessments, and congestion analyses to ensure high-quality, timely deliverables.
  • Serve as the project manager for interconnection activities, driving projects through the interconnection process while supporting greenfield efforts.
  • Support mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activities by evaluating interconnection reports, System Impact Studies, Facilities Studies, and Generator Interconnection Agreements (GIAs) to identify technical risks, schedule impacts, and potential fatal flaws.
  • Develop, or oversee the development of, interconnection request packages, including single-line diagrams, electrical models, and supporting technical documentation for utility-scale solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hybrid generation projects.
  • Review utility and RTO interconnection study results, network upgrade requirements, and cost estimates to identify opportunities to reduce project cost, schedule, and execution risk.
  • Lead Generator Interconnection Agreement (GIA) negotiations with utilities and RTOs through execution.
  • Represent Sol in utility and RTO stakeholder meetings, technical working groups, and industry committees, while monitoring regulatory, tariff, and market rule changes that may affect project development and interconnection strategy.
  • Perform market intelligence analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; concentration in Power Systems strongly preferred.
  • 0-5 years of relevant professional experience following graduation.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Strong understanding of power system fundamentals and analysis.
  • Experience working with one or more North American wholesale electricity markets or RTOs, including PJM, MISO, ERCOT, or SPP, is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of transmission planning studies and industry-standard power system modeling tools such as PSSE and TARA is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across technical and cross-functional teams.

Location: This is a full-time hybrid role based in Sol's Washington, DC headquarters. ย Remote option is not offered this time.
