Job description

The Opportunity
Zoox's mission is to build a purpose-built robotaxi that gives the world a better way to ride. Every line of that autonomous driving software has to be compiled, tested, and validated reliably at scale before it ever reaches the road. You'll join the team that owns the build infrastructure making that possible: maintaining and evolving our Bazel-based build system in a large, multi-language monorepo used by hundreds of engineers.

As a key contributor, you will take ownership of the build ecosystem supporting our rapidly expanding, safety-critical autonomous vehicle software. This role entails configuring and upgrading compilers, profiling and optimizing build pipelines, and serving as the primary expert for all build-related inquiries. While we have established a robust foundation using Bazel in a monorepo along with a remote build farm and cache, our goal is to elevate this into a world-class development experience. We are searching for a passionate engineer with a strong curiosity for optimizing build speeds and a commitment to empowering developers through metrics and advanced tooling within our fast-paced culture.

In this role, you will:
  • Own and evolve the core Bazel build ecosystem that every engineer at Zoox relies on to compile code and run tests
  • Directly accelerate engineering velocity by minimizing Bazel overhead, streamlining incremental builds to reduce iteration times, and working with our vendor Engflow to optimize our RBE platform
  • Develop custom Bazel rules and tooling (via Starlark) that abstract complexity so product teams can focus on autonomy problems, not build friction
  • Integrate software quality tools into our build system and development workflow (code coverage, static/dynamic analysis, include-what-you-use)
  • Build tools and dashboards to empower developers to ship better software faster
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering, mathematics, or related field and 8+ years of experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of expertise with Bazel (or similar systems like Buck or Pants)
  • Linux experience
  • Familiarity with maintaining large polyglot code bases
  • Comfortable writing Python to integrate tools and automate as much as possible
Bonus Qualifications
  • C++ experience
  • Experience contributing to open source bazel
$180,000 - $276,000 a year
