Job description

What We Do:
Brightwell is a payments company on a mission to make money movement faster, safer, and more accessible - whether across town or around the world. We build the full experience for banks and credit unions: from the mobile interfaces that guide account holders through transfers, to the platform infrastructure powering it all behind the scenes. That means multi-corridor payment routing, partner integrations across financial networks, and real-time compliance and fraud detection - with the reliability requirements that come with moving people's money.
We're a 65-person team based in Atlanta, scaling fast as more financial institutions sign on. The work moves quickly, the impact is tangible, and what you build will be in the hands of real users at real institutions. We're looking for bold thinkers to help us get there.
Where We Work:
This is a remote position open to candidates currently residing in FL, GA, IL, or TX.
Atlanta-area candidates will work hybrid (2 days/week in office at The Battery).
All other candidates will work fully remote, with quarterly travel to Atlanta required.
Who We Need:
We're looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to help bring our Azure infrastructure under Terraform and build the platform our product teams depend on. We have a running production environment; now we need someone to codify it, automate it, and make it self-service. You'll split your time evenly between platform engineering and operational work, with a clear mandate to reduce the operational burden over time.
This is a hands-on technical role with a 50/50 split. Half your time will be spent on platform engineering: Terraforming existing Azure infrastructure, building automation, improving observability, and collaborating with InfoSec on compliance controls. The other half is operational: supporting product teams with infrastructure requests, maintaining CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, and responding to incidents.
What You'll Do:
Balance platform engineering with operational work (50/50 split).
Platform Engineering (50%):
  • Terraform existing Azure infrastructure. This is the primary mission from day one.
  • Use AI-assisted tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate IaC development, automation scripting, and configuration management.
  • Automate repetitive tasks and build self-service tooling.
  • Improve observability and monitoring capabilities.
  • Create runbooks and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with InfoSec on security and compliance controls.
  • Work with your manager (Engineering Manager, Infrastructure & Platform) on platform strategy and priorities.

Operational Work (50%):
  • Support product teams with Azure infrastructure requests.
  • Manage Azure resources (VMs, Serverless Functions, App Services, SQL, networking, etc.).
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines and troubleshoot deployment issues.
  • Apply patches, updates, and security fixes.
  • Monitor production systems health, performance, and costs.
  • Respond to incidents and participate in weekly on-call rotation.

What We're Looking For:
  • 5+ years in infrastructure/platform/DevOps roles.
  • Strong Azure experience (App Services, Serverless, databases, networking, identity).
  • Infrastructure-as-code: Terraform or Bicep.
  • Monitoring: Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Datadog, Grafana, etc.
  • CI/CD: Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar.
  • Scripting: TypeScript, PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Understanding of networking, DNS, SSL/TLS, mTLS.
  • Experience leveraging modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate infrastructure automation and engineering workflows.
  • Comfortable with on-call responsibilities.

Bonus Points:
  • Fintech or regulated industry experience (SOC 2, PCI).
  • Configuration management: Ansible, etc.
  • GitOps practices.

What Success Looks Like:
  • First 30 days: Understand our Azure environment, shadow on-call, and start Terraforming your first resources.
  • First 90 days: Own on-call shifts, have meaningful IaC coverage in place, and establish patterns the team can build on.
  • First year: Reduce manual ticket volume by 30%, improve deployment reliability, and build self-service capabilities that free the team to focus on platform strategy.

On-Call Details:
  • Weekly on-call rotation (alternating with team).
  • Typical escalations: deployment issues, performance problems, outages.
  • Maintenance window reserved for once a month on Saturday, used as needed.

Why Work Here:
  • Real Ownership & Impact: Take charge of your work with full autonomy - what you build ships to real users at real financial institutions around the world.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: We welcome bold thinkers who are passionate about driving change, solving hard problems, and pushing innovation forward.
  • Growth & Development: We invest in your career with professional development support and expanding opportunities as we scale.
  • Flexible & Collaborative Team: Enjoy a remote-friendly environment and a tight-knit, inclusive team with opportunities for both social and professional engagement.
  • Competitive Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, disability, 401(k) with match, flexible spending accounts, paid parental leave, paid vacation, and more.

Brightwell is an equal opportunity employer committed to employing a diverse workforce and sustaining an inclusive culture.
