Job description

Engineering Infrastructure Engineer (software/networking)

Wavetronix is seeking an Engineering Infrastructure Engineer to support and improve the systems, tooling, and automation workflows used across engineering. This role helps reduce the operational burden on product engineers by maintaining reliable development systems, improving consistency across teams, and supporting scalable engineering workflows.

This position is focused on engineering tooling and infrastructure that supports development work. The right candidate will be comfortable working across a broad set of systems, learning unfamiliar tools, troubleshooting ambiguous problems, and collaborating directly with engineers to improve how work gets done. This is not a pure software development role, and it is not a traditional IT support role. It is a hands-on engineering systems role with room to expand across engineering tooling and infrastructure over time.

The Engineering Infrastructure Engineer will have the ability and desire to accomplish the following goals.

First 30 days:
  • Begin developing a conceptual high-level understanding of the engineering systems landscape, including development platforms, CI/CD workflows, build and release processes, artifact and dependency management, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Build working relationships with engineers and stakeholders across teams to understand how systems are used in practice and where pain points exist.
  • Review existing tooling, automation, and documentation to understand current ownership, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
First 90 days:
  • Develop practical familiarity with key systems and tools such as Azure DevOps, TeamCity, Black Duck, Coverity, build agents, selected Azure resources, virtual machines, automation scripts, and related engineering workflows.
  • Begin making small but meaningful improvements to engineering systems, tooling, or automation workflows with appropriate guidance and coordination.
  • Troubleshoot tooling and workflow issues with increasing independence, including identifying the right stakeholders, asking the right questions, and driving issues toward resolution.
  • Support changes to pipelines, build systems, permissions, automation, or related engineering tooling on a limited scale across the organization.
  • Contribute to documentation and standardization efforts so systems are easier to support, easier to understand, and less dependent on tribal knowledge.
First Year:
  • Operate effectively across a broad range of engineering systems, with the ability to go deeper into specific tools or workflows as needed.
  • Independently execute changes across engineering tooling and infrastructure, including development platforms, build agents, release pipelines, artifact flows, virtual machines, selected Azure resources, and internal automation.
  • Improve reliability, maintainability, and consistency across engineering development systems while reducing day-to-day operational burden on product engineers.
  • Develop trusted working relationships across engineering and become a dependable point of contact for tooling changes, troubleshooting, and workflow improvements.
  • Help establish clearer ownership, stronger documentation, and more standardized practices across engineering systems.
  • The ideal candidate will be a practical, systems-oriented engineer who is self-motivated, teachable, and eager to learn. They should be comfortable working in existing systems, exploring unfamiliar problems, and collaborating directly with others to move work forward. They take initiative, communicate clearly, and are willing to ask questions, gather context, and work across teams to find workable solutions
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in engineering tooling, build and release systems, CI/CD platforms, development infrastructure, or related technical roles.
  • Experience working with CI/CD systems, build pipelines, automation workflows, or engineering development platforms.
  • Solid scripting, automation, or programming ability, with the ability to read and modify existing code, write scripts, and build small internal tools when needed.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and improve complex existing systems rather than only working in greenfield environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working through ambiguous or previously unexplored technical issues.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work directly with engineers and stakeholders across teams.
Desired qualifications:
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and Azure-based engineering environments.
  • Experience with engineering systems such as CI/CD platforms, artifact and dependency management tools, build agents, code quality or security analysis systems, and similar development infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting embedded software or mixed software/firmware development workflows.
  • Experience with scripting in Bash or PowerShell, and programming in Node.js, Python, C#, or similar languages.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code or related configuration automation practices.
  • Experience improving documentation, standardizing workflows, or increasing reliability in shared engineering systems.
  • Exposure to engineering infrastructure, network-adjacent systems, or other environments that support development and testing workflows.
What success looks like:
  • Engineers spend less time dealing with tooling friction and operational overhead.
  • Build, CI/CD, and related development systems become more stable, more consistent, and easier to support.
  • Tooling issues are resolved faster and with clearer ownership.
  • Documentation and standard processes improve, reducing dependency on individual tribal knowledge.
  • The role grows into a trusted and capable steward of engineering development systems.
