STi is seeking a Graphic Artist / Web Illustrator to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Hazard Ready Nation, the Office of Risk and Resilience (ORR), and the Strategic Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (SHIRA) project. This role will support the development of cohesive, accessible, and visually compelling risk-related information products that help communicate complex hazard and resilience concepts to public safety stakeholders. The Graphic Artist will create custom illustrations, infographics, web-based graphics, SharePoint web-button illustrations, and printable illustrated materials that help emergency managers, city planners, decision-makers, and other non-technical audiences understand hazard exposure, cascading hazards, risk, mitigation, preparedness, and response concepts. The ideal candidate has strong illustration and graphic design skills for web-based applications, a portfolio demonstrating clear visual storytelling, and experience translating complex technical or scientific information into graphics that are accurate, accessible, and easy to understand. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include: • Create custom illustrations, infographics, web graphics, and printable illustrated materials supporting USGS Hazard Ready Nation, ORR, and SHIRA information products.
• Translate complex hazard, risk, resilience, and public safety concepts into clear visual assets for non-technical audiences.
• Develop cohesive illustrations that align with existing ORR and SHIRA visual identity, color palettes, and targeted aesthetic.
• Design web-based illustrations suitable for SharePoint, including web-button graphics that align with existing labels, wording, layout restrictions, and site requirements.
• Create graphics that accurately represent concepts such as hazard exposure, societal value, infrastructure impacts, cascading hazards, preparedness, mitigation, and response.
• Ensure graphics are compliant with Section 508 accessibility requirements for Federal electronic and information technology.
• Conduct or support color-contrast testing to ensure visual materials meet accessibility and usability expectations.
• Design graphics that can be used across web products, briefing materials, infographics, printable materials, and online resources.
• Adapt graphics as needed for software and platform constraints, including SharePoint, ArcGIS Online, Tableau, and other ORR/SHIRA tools.
• Collaborate virtually with Government subject matter experts, project personnel, and usability stakeholders to understand requirements and revise graphics based on feedback.
• Support quality control, review, and revision of illustrations and other graphics prior to Government approval.
• Deliver final graphics in high-resolution formats suitable for Government use, including JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or other approved formats.
• Complete assigned illustration requests in a timely manner based on BPA call requirements, including web-button illustration requests that may require completion within one month of request. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated skill in illustration and graphic design for web-based applications.
• Experience creating high-quality digital illustrations, infographics, web graphics, icons, buttons, or other visual assets for online use.
• Proficiency with specialized graphic design and illustration software used to develop professional digital graphics.
• Strong understanding of layout, composition, color, visual hierarchy, and consistent illustration style.
• Ability to translate technical, scientific, risk, hazard, or public safety information into clear visual concepts for non-technical audiences.
• Ability to design graphics that support accessibility, usability, and Section 508 compliance expectations.
• Familiarity with color-contrast considerations for accessible digital products.
• Ability to work virtually and collaborate with distributed Government and contractor stakeholders.
• Ability to receive feedback, revise graphics, and produce final deliverables that meet Government approval requirements.
• Ability to deliver high-resolution graphics in formats such as JPEG, TIFF, and PNG.
• Ability to pass the appropriate DOL-mandated background investigation/background check required for this contract. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience designing graphics, illustrations, or infographics for Federal, scientific, emergency management, environmental, public safety, or risk communication programs.
• Experience supporting web-based information products, SharePoint sites, dashboards, online resources, or digital public-facing materials.
• Experience designing accessible graphics for Federal audiences, including Section 508-aware design practices.
• Experience creating illustrations related to natural hazards, climate risk, resilience, infrastructure, emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, or response.
• Familiarity with SharePoint, ArcGIS Online, Tableau, or similar platforms used to present information visually.
• Portfolio demonstrating clean, cohesive illustration style and ability to simplify complex information into visually engaging graphics.
• Experience working with subject matter experts, usability experts, communications teams, or technical stakeholders to refine visual products.
• Experience supporting quality control, review, and revision of graphic products in a deadline-driven environment. WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Work is expected to be fully virtual / remote from the contractor’s work site.
• Contractor must have adequate technology, software, internet access, and communication tools to perform virtual design work.
• Work will support a Federal hazard risk and resilience mission focused on improving public understanding and decision-making around natural hazards and public safety.
