Remote Humanitarian Engineering information

What is remote humanitarian engineering?

Remote humanitarian engineering refers to the application of engineering principles and technology to solve humanitarian challenges, such as access to clean water, sanitation, and energy, while working remotely. Professionals in this field collaborate with communities and organizations, often in developing regions, to design and implement sustainable solutions from a distance. Remote work in humanitarian engineering has become increasingly common due to advancements in communication technology, allowing for global teamwork and project management. This approach enables experts to provide technical support, training, and oversight without being physically present at the project site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote humanitarian engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Humanitarian Engineer, you need a solid grounding in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant degree such as civil, mechanical, or environmental engineering. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools, AutoCAD, GIS, and sometimes certifications like EIT or PMP are typically required. Strong cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for effectively addressing diverse community needs from afar. These skills and qualities are essential for designing sustainable solutions, ensuring project success, and overcoming challenges in resource-limited and remote environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote humanitarian engineers when working with teams in different countries?

Remote humanitarian engineers often navigate challenges such as coordinating across time zones, managing communication barriers due to language or connectivity issues, and adapting engineering solutions to meet local cultural and resource constraints. Collaboration typically involves regular virtual meetings, documentation sharing, and remote troubleshooting, which requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Building trust and understanding local needs remotely can take extra effort, but leveraging digital tools and establishing clear communication channels helps teams stay connected and effective.

Which remote humanitarian engineering jobs can be done remotely?

Remote humanitarian engineering jobs include roles such as remote project engineers, technical consultants, and program coordinators who design and implement solutions for underserved communities. These positions often require skills in engineering design, software tools, and remote collaboration platforms, allowing work from anywhere with internet access. However, some roles may require on-site visits or fieldwork depending on project needs.

Job description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is one of the world's largest international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (INGO), at work in more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. A force for humanity, IRC employees deliver lasting impact by restoring safety, dignity and hope to millions. If you're a solutions-driven, passionate change-maker, come join us in positively impacting the lives of millions of people world-wide for a better future.

About the IRC

The IT department provides end-to-end solutions for the organization including application development & integration, system deployment, quality assurance & testing, and overall Project Management in an effort to help the organization build and implement the best solutions for its business needs.

The Opportunity

Every donation processed, every campaign that lands, every supporter who stays engaged - that's the technology you'll help build and deliver.

As IT Program Manager, you'll manage the digital platforms behind one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations, directly enabling the fundraising that funds life-saving programs for displaced communities across the globe. This is a high-impact, fast-paced role at the intersection of technology delivery, stakeholder engagement, and mission-driven purpose.

You'll be a core member of our Project Management team, working across a modern MarTech ecosystem - including donation and e-commerce platforms (Fundraise Up, Springboard), our website (Drupal), Salesforce CRM, Databricks, email marketing (Pardot), and SMS platforms (Mobile Commons, Mogli). You'll own the delivery of enhancements, integrations, and new capability launches that keep the IRC's digital supporter experience best-in-class.

Why Join Us?

  • Real-world impact - your work directly supports humanitarian programs serving millions of people in crisis.
  • Breadth and ownership - lead a complex, multi-platform portfolio with genuine strategic influence from day one.
  • Collaborative culture - work alongside Product Managers, Data Engineers, Business Analysts, and business stakeholders in a distributed, multicultural team that's deeply committed to its mission.
  • Modern delivery - Agile/Scrum at the core, with room to shape how the team works.
  • Remote-first flexibility - work from anywhere in the US as part of a truly global organization.

What You'll Do

Drive end-to-end program delivery Own the full lifecycle of multiple concurrent MarTech initiatives - from scope definition and roadmap planning through to launch and post-delivery review. Develop and maintain detailed project plans, work breakdown structures, and product backlogs, ensuring delivery against time, budget, and quality targets.

Champion Agile ways of working Serve as Scrum Master for your project and product teams - coaching on Agile principles, facilitating sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and reviews, and proactively removing blockers to keep delivery on track.

Keep stakeholders informed and aligned Prepare clear, timely status reports covering scope, milestones, risks, and budget. Communicate confidently with audiences from engineers to senior executives, tailoring your message appropriately. Manage expectations and build trust across business and technology teams.

Manage budgets and vendors Oversee budget tracking and vendor invoicing for your portfolio. Support cost estimation, validate expenditure, and contribute to the annual budget planning process to ensure initiatives are delivered within financial targets.

Lead business analysis activities Work with the team to define and track functional and technical requirements, document current and future state processes, and coordinate testing activities. Partner closely with Business Analysts to ensure delivery is grounded in well-understood business needs.

Manage risk proactively Maintain risk registers and mitigation plans. Surface issues early, escalate where needed, and keep the project leadership team ahead of potential blockers.

Shape the roadmap Partner with Product Managers to build out product and project roadmaps that reflect both business priorities and technical realities, contributing to a coherent long-term vision for the MarTech portfolio.

What You'll Bring

You'll need:
