What is the difference between Remote High Performance Computing vs Remote Data Scientist?

AspectRemote High Performance ComputingRemote Data Scientist
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields; experience with HPC systemsDegree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields; proficiency in programming languages
Work EnvironmentAccess to supercomputers, clusters, or cloud HPC resources; collaborative teamsData analysis environments, cloud platforms, and programming tools; often collaborative
Industry UsageResearch institutions, scientific computing, engineering simulationsTech companies, finance, healthcare, research

Remote High Performance Computing specialists focus on managing and utilizing supercomputing resources for complex simulations and data processing. Remote Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights. While both roles require programming skills and advanced degrees, HPC roles emphasize system management and computational efficiency, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, you need expertise in parallel computing, cluster management, and strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C/C++, or Fortran, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with HPC job schedulers (like SLURM or PBS), cloud platforms, and Linux-based systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to work independently are crucial soft skills in remote environments. These competencies ensure efficient deployment, management, and troubleshooting of complex HPC resources while supporting diverse user needs from a distance.

What is Remote High Performance Computing?

Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) refers to the use of powerful computing resources and clusters that are accessed over the internet or a network, rather than being located locally. This setup allows researchers, engineers, and organizations to perform complex computations, simulations, and data analysis from anywhere, without the need for on-site supercomputers. Remote HPC enables scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness by allowing users to leverage shared resources, often provided by cloud service providers or specialized data centers.

How does a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) professional typically collaborate with research teams and IT staff?

Remote HPC professionals often work closely with research scientists, data analysts, and IT administrators to ensure computational resources are efficiently allocated and optimized for large-scale projects. Collaboration usually happens through virtual meetings, ticketing systems, and shared documentation platforms, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Daily tasks may involve troubleshooting user issues, managing job scheduling, and maintaining cluster performance, all while coordinating with geographically dispersed teams. This dynamic environment fosters continuous learning and exposure to cutting-edge scientific and technical applications.

Job description

MRI Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Parachute Modeling Engineer on the JETS II contract at NASA Johnson Space Center. In this role, you will develop and maintain state-of-the-art multi-body parachute system models and integrate them into NASA's flight mechanics simulations in support of the Orion and Artemis Programs, working alongside NASA civil servants, the GN&C team, and parachute analysis subject matter experts to deliver high-fidelity simulation tools for crewed spacecraft recovery systems. This role has the potential to be fully remote for the right candidate, which is rare for this contract as it typically requires in person onsite work at Johnson Space Center.

A typical day involves developing and validating parachute deployment, inflation, and full-open flight models and integrating them into NASA's Julia-based flight mechanics simulation or NASA Trick-based simulations written in C++. In the morning you may be collaborating with parachute analysis experts to reconstruct drop test data or assess parachute system performance from spacecraft flights. In the afternoon you could be running simulations on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) system to support landing touchdown condition analyses, writing requirements documentation, or presenting verification and validation results to the team in a technical review. The work is analytically demanding, safety-critical, and directly tied to enabling safe crew recovery for every Orion and future commercial crew mission.

What We Are Looking For

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 2โ€“5 years of experience in the field or a related area
  • Experience with 6-DOF and multi-body flight mechanics simulations
  • Experience with software development in any programming language
  • Experience developing, verifying, and validating parachute or other flight mechanics simulation models
  • Experience analyzing spacecraft performance
  • Experience with source code management tools such as Git or GitLab
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across multiple technical disciplines
  • Ability to work in a team environment consisting of NASA civil servants and contractor employees
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision
  • Ability to prepare written documents and present findings at technical meetings and reviews
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products

Preferences:

  • A bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited engineering school with five (5) years of related engineering experience, a master's degree with four (4) years of related experience, or a Ph.D. with zero (0) years of related experience
  • D. in Aerospace Engineering with a focus on flight mechanics
  • Proficiency in Julia, C++, and Linux
  • Experience with software design for simulation frameworks
  • Proven experience reconstructing parachute drop tests or spacecraft flight performance from telemetry data
  • Experience executing simulations on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems
  • Familiarity with NASA JSC organizations, processes, and procedures, including the Orion or Commercial Crew programs
  • Experience participating in design reviews, technical interchange meetings, or anomaly investigations
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across GN&C, structures, and parachute analysis disciplines

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on your experience and business needs, we may consider candidates at any level for which the position has been advertised.

Benefits and Perks

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, company paid life and disability insurance, paid time off, and 401(k). You'll also enjoy a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off, when applicable), and strong career development opportunities working alongside NASA's human spaceflight teams.

MRI Technologies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.

As we are a Federal Contractor, most positions require the employee to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government background investigation. MRI also completes a pre-screening background check for anyone offered employment.
