Remote High Performance Computing specialists focus on managing and utilizing supercomputing resources for complex simulations and data processing. Remote Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights. While both roles require programming skills and advanced degrees, HPC roles emphasize system management and computational efficiency, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, you need expertise in parallel computing, cluster management, and strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C/C++, or Fortran, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with HPC job schedulers (like SLURM or PBS), cloud platforms, and Linux-based systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to work independently are crucial soft skills in remote environments. These competencies ensure efficient deployment, management, and troubleshooting of complex HPC resources while supporting diverse user needs from a distance.

What is Remote High Performance Computing?

Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) refers to the use of powerful computing resources and clusters that are accessed over the internet or a network, rather than being located locally. This setup allows researchers, engineers, and organizations to perform complex computations, simulations, and data analysis from anywhere, without the need for on-site supercomputers. Remote HPC enables scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness by allowing users to leverage shared resources, often provided by cloud service providers or specialized data centers.

How does a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) professional typically collaborate with research teams and IT staff?

Remote HPC professionals often work closely with research scientists, data analysts, and IT administrators to ensure computational resources are efficiently allocated and optimized for large-scale projects. Collaboration usually happens through virtual meetings, ticketing systems, and shared documentation platforms, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Daily tasks may involve troubleshooting user issues, managing job scheduling, and maintaining cluster performance, all while coordinating with geographically dispersed teams. This dynamic environment fosters continuous learning and exposure to cutting-edge scientific and technical applications.

Job Title: Solutions Sales Engineer

Location: Hoboken, NJ or Remote with Travel

Division: Revenue

Department: Applications

About Us

Quantum Computing Inc. (QCi) (Nasdaq: QUBT) is an innovative, integrated photonics company that provides accessible and affordable quantum machines to the world today. QCi products are designed to operate at room temperature and low power at an affordable cost. The Companyโ€™s portfolio of core technology and products offer unique capabilities in the areas of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security as well as remote sensing applications.

Position Description

The Senior Solutions Sales Engineer is a highโ€‘impact, customerโ€‘facing role responsible for driving both technical adoption and revenue growth. This role blends solutions engineering, sales engineering, product expertise, Python prototyping, and handsโ€‘on deployments for QCiโ€™s quantum and quantumโ€‘inspired computing platforms.

You will support the full customer lifecycle: preโ€‘sales discovery, demos, proofโ€‘ofโ€‘concepts, deployment, onboarding, troubleshooting, and longโ€‘term adoption. You should be equally comfortable designing technical solutions, presenting to customers, and rolling up your sleeves during onโ€‘site installs for multiโ€‘day engagements. Ideal for someone who thrives in emerging technology, enjoys field work and collaboration, and can translate complex quantum concepts into practical business value.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary customerโ€‘facing technical lead, handling discovery, demos, support, and ongoing guidance.
  • Review, triage, and route support tickets while maintaining clear communication with customers and internal teams.
  • Develop Pythonโ€‘based proofsโ€‘ofโ€‘concept to validate use cases and demonstrate platform capabilities.
  • Lead onโ€‘site deployments, integrations, and user onboarding (including multiโ€‘day customer visits).
  • Translate quantum and reservoir computing concepts into practical business value for diverse audiences.
  • Support the sales cycle through technical discovery, demos, solution design, and proposal inputs.
  • Represent QCi at conferences and events by delivering live demos and engaging prospects.
  • Capture customer feedback and insights to inform product improvements, documentation, and internal workflows.
  • Collaborate crossโ€‘functionally with Sales, Engineering, Product, Data Science, and Marketing to deliver tailored solutions and aligned customer experiences.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Sciences, or related technical/business field.
  • Masterโ€™s degree or quantum/AI focus preferred.
  • 5โ€“8+ years in customerโ€‘facing technical roles (Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, Technical Account Management, Customer Success Engineering, Application Engineering).
  • Strong track record supporting sales cycles, delivering demos, and enabling technical decisionโ€‘making.
  • Advanced Python proficiency, including scripting, prototyping, data libraries (pandas, numpy), and experience supporting embedded software or internal tools.
  • Understanding of resource access, system permissions, APIs, and basic architecture principles.
  • Experience in onโ€‘site deployments, system integrations, hardware/software configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Confident public speaker capable of representing QCi at industry events and customer briefings.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and the ability to break down complex concepts for any audience.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and problemโ€‘solving skills in fastโ€‘moving environments.
  • Experience with collaboration/support tools such as Jira, Confluence, Salesforce, and ticketing systems.
  • DoD Security Clearance, or ability to obtain one. Due to federal export control regulations, this position requires the applicant to qualify as a โ€˜U.S. Personโ€™ as defined by U.S. law (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or asylee/refugee).
  • Willingness to travel 30โ€“50%, including multiโ€‘day onsite customer engagements (3โ€“5 days).

Incumbent(s) in this position may be required to perform other duties and special assignments not specifically stated above. Statements outlined in this section are designated as essential job functions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
