Remote High Performance Computing specialists focus on managing and utilizing supercomputing resources for complex simulations and data processing. Remote Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights. While both roles require programming skills and advanced degrees, HPC roles emphasize system management and computational efficiency, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist, you need expertise in parallel computing, cluster management, and strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C/C++, or Fortran, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with HPC job schedulers (like SLURM or PBS), cloud platforms, and Linux-based systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to work independently are crucial soft skills in remote environments. These competencies ensure efficient deployment, management, and troubleshooting of complex HPC resources while supporting diverse user needs from a distance.

What is Remote High Performance Computing?

Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) refers to the use of powerful computing resources and clusters that are accessed over the internet or a network, rather than being located locally. This setup allows researchers, engineers, and organizations to perform complex computations, simulations, and data analysis from anywhere, without the need for on-site supercomputers. Remote HPC enables scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness by allowing users to leverage shared resources, often provided by cloud service providers or specialized data centers.

How does a Remote High Performance Computing (HPC) professional typically collaborate with research teams and IT staff?

Remote HPC professionals often work closely with research scientists, data analysts, and IT administrators to ensure computational resources are efficiently allocated and optimized for large-scale projects. Collaboration usually happens through virtual meetings, ticketing systems, and shared documentation platforms, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Daily tasks may involve troubleshooting user issues, managing job scheduling, and maintaining cluster performance, all while coordinating with geographically dispersed teams. This dynamic environment fosters continuous learning and exposure to cutting-edge scientific and technical applications.

Job Title: Quantum Optics Scientist (Post-Doc)

Location: Hoboken, NJ

Division: Technology

Department: R&D

About Us

Quantum Computing Inc. (QCi) (Nasdaq: QUBT) is an innovative, integrated photonics company that provides accessible and affordable quantum machines to the world today. QCi products are designed to operate at room temperature and low power at an affordable cost. The Companyโ€™s portfolio of core technology and products offer unique capabilities in the areas of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security as well as remote sensing applications.

Position Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Quantum Optics to join our research and development team focused on QCiโ€™s entropy quantum computing solutions. This position is structured as a one-year contract, with the opportunity for extension based on satisfactory performance and mutual consent by both parties. The role emphasizes theoretical modeling and simulation of quantum photonic devices and systems and requires strong expertise in quantum optics. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with both the high-performance computing application team and the entropy computing hardware team to advance QCiโ€™s next-generation computational technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply theoretical models of quantum photonic devices and systems relevant to entropy quantum computing.
  • Perform simulations of optical components, integrated photonic circuits, and light matter interactions to guide device design.
  • Explore new architectures in quantum optics that enhance the efficiency and scalability of entropy-based computing solutions.
  • Contribute to algorithmโ€“hardware co-design by identifying opportunities where photonic implementations provide competitive advantages.
  • Explore and develop quantum algorithms compatible with entropy computing in collaboration with the scientific computing group at QCi.
  • Publish and present research outcomes in journals and conferences.

Required Skills and Experience

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field with a focus on theoretical quantum optics.
  • Deep expertise in quantum optics, including fields such as quantum coherence, entanglement, cavity/circuit QED, or nonlinear optics.
  • Strong background in mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of photonic or quantum systems.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++.
  • Demonstrated research record with publications in leading journals.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with quantum information science, quantum computing, or related computational approaches.
  • Experience with integrated photonics, waveguide-based systems, or lightโ€“matter interaction models.
  • Knowledge of statistical physics approaches to open quantum systems and noise modeling.
  • Industry, government, or academic R&D experience in quantum technologies.
  • Experience mentoring junior researchers or working in collaborative project teams.

Incumbent(s) in this position may be required to perform other duties and special assignments not specifically stated above. Statements outlined in this section are designated as essential job functions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
