| Aspect | Remote Hec Ras | Remote Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | HEC-RAS certification, GIS knowledge | Engineering degree, PE license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Software-focused, data analysis, modeling | Design, project management, site visits (less remote) |
| Industry Usage | Hydrology, floodplain modeling, water resources | Construction, infrastructure, transportation |
Remote Hec Ras specialists primarily focus on hydrological modeling and water resource analysis using HEC-RAS software, often working remotely in data analysis roles. Remote Civil Engineers have a broader scope, including design and project management in civil infrastructure, with some roles offering remote work. While both roles require engineering knowledge, Remote Hec Ras positions are more software and data-centric, whereas Remote Civil Engineers may involve more site-based activities.

Job Title: Civil Design Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Director of Engineering
Location: Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
The Civil Design Engineer will support the development, design, and execution of large-scale solar PV projects within an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) environment. This role focuses on the civil and site engineering aspects of utility-scale solar projects—from conceptual design and permitting through detailed construction documents and as-built closeout. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of grading, drainage, stormwater management, and site layout, with the ability to integrate engineering principles into efficient, constructible, and cost-effective solar designs.
Develop and review civil site designs including grading, drainage, access roads, foundations, and stormwater systems for utility-scale solar projects.
Prepare and/or review design deliverables such as site plans, grading plans, erosion control plans, and construction details.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, structural, geotechnical, and construction) to ensure coordinated project designs.
Support permitting efforts by preparing civil design documentation and responding to jurisdictional comments.
Perform site analysis using topographic data, geotechnical reports, and hydrology studies to guide design decisions.
Utilize civil engineering and CAD software (e.g., Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, or similar) to produce detailed and accurate drawings.
Evaluate constructability and provide field support during construction, including review of RFIs, submittals, and redlines.
Assist in developing civil design standards, templates, and best practices for continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including stormwater management, environmental, and permitting requirements.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.
3–5 years of experience in civil/site design, preferably in renewable energy, infrastructure, or land development projects.
Experience working in an EPC or design-build environment preferred.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design tools.
Strong understanding of hydrology, grading, and drainage design principles.
Familiarity with solar plant layout and interconnection concepts a plus.
Knowledge of permitting processes and environmental compliance requirements.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
