What are remote HEC-RAS jobs?

Remote HEC-RAS jobs refer to positions where professionals use the HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System) software to perform hydraulic modeling and river analysis from a remote location, such as a home office. These roles often involve tasks like floodplain mapping, river modeling, and hydrologic studies for engineering firms, government agencies, or environmental consultancies. Remote HEC-RAS specialists typically collaborate with teams online, analyze data, and prepare technical reports or visualizations for flood risk assessments and water resource projects. Strong skills in HEC-RAS software, hydrology, and GIS are usually required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote HEC-RAS Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote HEC-RAS Specialist, you need a strong background in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, and hydraulic modeling, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in water resources. Proficiency with HEC-RAS software, GIS platforms, and familiarity with FEMA guidelines or floodplain management certifications are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and delivering accurate results. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing reliable hydraulic analyses and effectively managing projects in a remote, independent work environment.

What are some common challenges faced when working remotely as a HEC-RAS hydraulic modeler, and how can they be overcome?

Working remotely as a HEC-RAS hydraulic modeler often involves challenges such as collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, managing large datasets, and maintaining clear communication with project stakeholders. Job description

Job Title: Civil Design Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Director of Engineering
Location: Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Civil Design Engineer will support the development, design, and execution of large-scale solar PV projects within an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) environment. This role focuses on the civil and site engineering aspects of utility-scale solar projects—from conceptual design and permitting through detailed construction documents and as-built closeout. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of grading, drainage, stormwater management, and site layout, with the ability to integrate engineering principles into efficient, constructible, and cost-effective solar designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and review civil site designs including grading, drainage, access roads, foundations, and stormwater systems for utility-scale solar projects.

  • Prepare and/or review design deliverables such as site plans, grading plans, erosion control plans, and construction details.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, structural, geotechnical, and construction) to ensure coordinated project designs.

  • Support permitting efforts by preparing civil design documentation and responding to jurisdictional comments.

  • Perform site analysis using topographic data, geotechnical reports, and hydrology studies to guide design decisions.

  • Utilize civil engineering and CAD software (e.g., Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, or similar) to produce detailed and accurate drawings.

  • Evaluate constructability and provide field support during construction, including review of RFIs, submittals, and redlines.

  • Assist in developing civil design standards, templates, and best practices for continuous improvement.

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including stormwater management, environmental, and permitting requirements.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.

  • 3–5 years of experience in civil/site design, preferably in renewable energy, infrastructure, or land development projects.

  • Experience working in an EPC or design-build environment preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design tools.

  • Strong understanding of hydrology, grading, and drainage design principles.

  • Familiarity with solar plant layout and interconnection concepts a plus.

  • Knowledge of permitting processes and environmental compliance requirements.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
