Remote Graphql information

What is a remote GraphQL developer?

A Remote GraphQL Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building and maintaining APIs using the GraphQL query language, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. Their primary responsibilities include designing GraphQL schemas, creating resolvers, integrating data sources, and ensuring the API's performance and security. Remote GraphQL Developers collaborate with frontend and backend teams through online communication tools to deliver efficient and scalable APIs for web and mobile applications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote GraphQL developer?

A Remote GraphQL Developer needs strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript, experience with GraphQL APIs, and a solid grasp of web development fundamentals, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Apollo, Relay, and version control systems such as Git, as well as cloud platforms, is typically expected. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills ensure efficient API development, seamless integration with client applications, and effective teamwork across distributed environments.

What are common challenges faced by remote GraphQL developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote GraphQL developers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration due to distributed team structures. Coordinating schema changes, ensuring consistency across services, and debugging complex queries can be more difficult without in-person meetings. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish clear documentation practices, participate in regular virtual stand-ups, and use collaborative tools like version control and API documentation platforms. Proactively reaching out to team members and leveraging asynchronous communication channels can also help maintain alignment and productivity.

What is the difference between Remote Graphql vs Remote Backend Developer?

AspectRemote GraphqlRemote Backend Developer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of GraphQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, API designKnowledge of server-side languages (e.g., Node.js, Python), databases, API development
Work EnvironmentPrimarily focused on API schema design, query optimization, and data fetchingBroader backend tasks including server setup, database management, and API integration
Industry UsageUsed in companies implementing GraphQL for data fetchingUsed across various industries for server-side application development
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for specialization in GraphQL technologyCompared for broader backend development roles

Remote Graphql specialists focus on designing and optimizing GraphQL APIs, while Remote Backend Developers handle a wider range of server-side tasks. Both roles require backend knowledge, but GraphQL roles are more specialized in API query language, making them distinct in scope and skill set.

Job description

Notably is growing our team of people on a mission to make research a part of everyday work. We help teams collect, analyze, and share qualitative research.

Notably is an inclusive and supportive team that trusts and respects each other. We bring our whole selves to work and celebrate what makes us unique. We're an early-stage startup with a high bar for excellence & productivity, but we leave ego, competitiveness, and hustle culture at the door. We believe in creating a calm and inviting workplace culture so that we can all thrive and do our best work and still have plenty of time to refuel our energy.

Some projects you could work on:
  • The split-screen infinite canvas and table workspace in Notably where researchers analyze qualitative data.
  • Enhancing the canvas experience with new tools and collaboration.
  • Exploring new ways to visualize qualitative data with a quantitative lens that could help researchers make meaning out of the mess.
  • Combining machine learning and AI with research frameworks and best practices to create an experience that will super power our researchers.
  • Solving for performance and memory optimizations we want to keep pushing the limits of what's possible while maintaining high performance.
  • Improving core features like search, transcriptions, content management, and more.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
  • At least 3 years of professional experience shipping features or products as a full-stack developer.
  • Demonstrated fluency with the following:
    • Typescript, React, GraphQL, and Node.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and TDD in Javascript.
  • Experience with the following is a plus:
    • Familiarity with Postgres, AWS.
    • Experience building real-time collaboration tools
    • Experience using HTML canvas
    • Background in AI, NLP, or data science.
  • Proactive and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A desire to work in a startup: high impact and experimental.
  • An interest in mentorship, learning from others, and digging into new challenges.
  • A collaborative vision of the product process. Every member of our team is involved from ideation to implementation.
  • A healthy skepticism and curiosity. Comfortable saying I don't know and participating in research calls with users.
Our hiring process:

The end-to-end hiring process will take a couple of weeks and includes:

  • An initial call with our CPO and founder.
  • A virtual interview with your future teammates.
  • A paid take-home project (that could be completed in a day) and practical technical screen with our engineering team.

If you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with the points outlined in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

Timezone requirements:

This is a fully remote position, however, candidates must either be based out of Europe (our technical lead is in Georgia) or in the Eastern timezone in US. Candidates who don't match this preference will not be considered for this role.

Pay & benefits:
  • Competitive salary & equity
  • Remote-first
  • Generous PTO
  • Learning & development stipend
  • Work from home stipend
  • Company on-sites
About Notably:

Notably was founded by Brittany Fuller and Allison Marshall in 2021 after both having experienced in their careers as aproduct manager and a product designer, a lack of solutions that aligned with the methodologies commonly used for research analysis and synthesis. They saw an opportunity to innovate in this space and solve a timeless problem: making sense out of conversational data. Today, Notably helps teams collect, analyze, and share qualitative research.
