Role Summary
At the center of these extraordinary events is the Technical Director, a creative technologist who transforms bold ideas into executable, scalable production systems. This role goes beyond traditional show execution, bringing modern expertise in live, hybrid, and virtual production environments. The Technical Director ensure that every technical element is not only functional, but forward-thinking, integrated, and resilient under pressure.
Reporting to the Director of Event Operations, the Technical Director (TD) leads the technical planning and execution of in-person, hybrid, and virtual events. Working closely with Producers, Project Managers, Creative Services, warehouse teams, vendors, and external partners, the TD oversees technical strategy, system design, vendor coordination, pre-production planning, and onsite execution to ensure alignment across creative vision, technical execution, timelines, and budget.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Production & Technical Design
    • Interpret creative briefs and translate them into detailed technical documentation (CAD drawings, signal flow diagrams, RFPs, gear lists)
    • Lead comprehensive technical planning processes, ensuring labor, equipment, and workflows are fully defined prior to show site
    • Manage technical budgets, ensuring cost-effective solutions while maintaining creative integrity
    • Assess venue capabilities and infrastructure (power, rigging, internet, dock access)
    • Identify risks early and implement contingency plans to prevent on-site failures
  • Vendor & Crew Management
    • Source, select, and coordinate with A/V and technical vendors
    • Own technical labor strategy, including staffing forecasts and contingency planning
    • Build and maintain a network of technical partners and freelancers for global events
    • Ensure all vendors and partners deliver to specifications, timelines, and quality standards
  • Onsite Execution
    • Serve as the primary technical lead on-site for load-in, show execution, and load-out
    • Lead technical teams through complex builds and live show environments
    • Troubleshoot technical issues in real time and direct rapid resolution
    • Participate in client and venue meetings, technical rehearsals, and production meetings
    • Maintain calm, professional leadership under pressure
  • Post-Event Support
    • Document post-show reports and evaluate technical performance
    • Analyze root causes of challenges and implement process improvements
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of technical systems, workflows, and standards

Requirements
What You Bring to the Table
  • 7+ years of experience as a Technical Director or Technical Manager in live events, broadcast, or experiential production
  • Active thirst for staying current in the industry and learning new gear and technology
  • Deep expertise in modern event technology ecosystems including vMix, OBS, or similar live switching platforms, streaming and hybrid event infrastructure
  • Experience with LED wall systems, including planning, setup, and content integration
  • Strong understanding of signal flow across both live and virtual production environments
  • Experience building scalable technical systems and workflows-not just exec
  • Deep expertise in video and audio systems
  • Working knowledge of lighting, rigging, scenic, and networking systems
  • Confidence to troubleshoot technical challenges, including the ability to jump in for underperforming technicians
  • Experience managing technical vendors, budgets, and labor across multiple event scales
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear communication for non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong collaboration skills across internal teams and external partners
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic proficiency in Vectorworks CAD and technical documentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 products
