What is a Remote GitOps Engineer?

A Remote GitOps Engineer is a software professional who manages and automates infrastructure and application deployments using GitOps principles, typically while working from a remote location. GitOps is a methodology that uses Git repositories as the single source of truth for declarative infrastructure and applications. The engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting continuous deployment pipelines, ensuring that changes are version-controlled and auditable. They often work with tools like Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Flux, collaborating with development and operations teams to streamline DevOps workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote GitOps Engineer?

To thrive as a Remote GitOps Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, infrastructure-as-code, and experience with cloud platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Git, and CI/CD systems, along with certifications such as CKA or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are key soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing complex workflows. These skills ensure efficient, reliable, and scalable deployment pipelines, enabling teams to deliver software securely and quickly in distributed environments.

How does a Remote GitOps Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment processes?

As a Remote GitOps Engineer, you'll frequently collaborate with both development and operations teams through tools like Git, Slack, and video conferencing. Your main responsibility is to ensure deployment pipelines are automated and transparent, often acting as a bridge between developers writing code and operations teams managing infrastructure. Regular communication and documentation are crucial to resolve issues quickly and keep everyone aligned. You will also participate in code reviews, incident response, and infrastructure improvements, ensuring deployments are reliable and reproducible across distributed teams.

Job description

About Hubstaff

At Hubstaff, our mission is to empower people to have their most productive workday. We do this by providing the industry-leading workforce analytics and time tracking platform for remote and distributed teams.

We\'ve been fully remote for over a decade—long before it became a trend—and we continue to believe that remote work represents the most significant shift in the modern workplace since the advent of the PC. Our platform helps more than 200,000 global users track time, gain visibility into work, manage schedules, and automate payments with transparency and accountability at its core.

We\'re a product-led company with a winning culture, strong momentum, and a long-term vision: to become an essential part of every remote company\'s tech stack. And we\'re just getting started.

  The Role

We\'re hiring a Principal DevOps Engineer to help shape the future of Hubstaff\'s cloud platform.

This is a high-impact, fully remote role for an experienced infrastructure engineer who enjoys building secure, scalable, and highly automated systems. You\'ll partner with our CTO, architects, and engineering teams to improve reliability, security, developer experience, and platform scalability across our global SaaS platform.

This isn\'t a traditional operations role. We\'re looking for someone who thrives on solving complex infrastructure challenges, automating everything possible, and building the internal platform that enables engineering teams to move faster.

If you enjoy building secure, scalable cloud platforms, automating infrastructure, and solving complex engineering challenges, we\'d love to meet you.

  What You\'ll Do
  • Design and operate scalable cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP.

  • Build and improve Kubernetes, Linux, and cloud networking environments.

  • Standardize infrastructure using Terraform, Terragrunt, Helm, and GitOps practices.

  • Improve CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and ArgoCD.

  • Build monitoring, logging, and alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, CloudWatch, and Better Stack.

  • Strengthen security, disaster recovery, and platform resilience.

  • Drive platform strategy while remaining hands-on with implementation.

  • Improve developer productivity through automation and self-service infrastructure.

  What Makes You Successful
  • You\'ve built and operated production cloud infrastructure at scale using AWS (GCP experience is a plus).

  • You\'re an expert in Terraform, Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, Helm, and modern GitOps practices.

  • You\'ve built reliable CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, or similar tools.

  • You have experience supporting production PostgreSQL, Redis, and distributed systems.

  • You\'ve implemented monitoring and observability using Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, CloudWatch, or similar platforms.

  • You understand networking, IAM, encryption, disaster recovery, and cloud security best practices.

  • You\'re comfortable supporting applications built with Ruby on Rails, Go, Rust, or Node.js.

  • You enjoy solving complex infrastructure problems through automation and ownership.

You\'ll Stand Out If You Have
  • Helped scale infrastructure for a high-growth SaaS product.

  • Built or evolved a platform engineering, SRE, or DevOps function.

  • Led cloud modernization or infrastructure transformation initiatives.

  • Supported applications built with Ruby on Rails, Go, Rust, or Node.js.

  • Worked with GitOps, service mesh technologies, or serverless platforms.

  • Built infrastructure for data platforms or ETL workloads.

  • Thrived in a fully remote, async-first engineering culture.

  Why You\'ll Love Working Here
  • Work alongside experienced engineering leaders on a platform used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

  • Own projects from architecture through implementation.

  • Join a highly autonomous, remote-first engineering culture built on trust and ownership.

  • Work with modern cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and observability tooling at scale.

  • Make a direct impact on platform reliability, developer productivity, and customer experience.
