Remote Gis Software Developer information

How do Remote GIS Software Developers typically collaborate with distributed teams on complex mapping projects?

Remote GIS Software Developers often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including cartographers, data analysts, and project managers, using communication platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Collaboration is facilitated through version control systems (such as Git), shared cloud-based GIS environments, and regular virtual meetings to align on project goals and troubleshoot challenges. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential for ensuring data integrity and synchronizing development efforts, especially when integrating geospatial data from multiple sources. This setup allows developers to contribute effectively regardless of location while maintaining project momentum.

What is a Remote GIS Software Developer?

A Remote GIS Software Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software while working from a remote location. Their work involves creating applications and tools to collect, analyze, and visualize spatial data, which can be used in fields such as urban planning, environmental science, transportation, and more. They typically collaborate with teams online, using specialized programming languages and technologies like Python, JavaScript, and GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS. Remote GIS Software Developers are responsible for troubleshooting issues, integrating data sources, and ensuring the software meets user needs. Their role requires both technical programming skills and an understanding of geospatial concepts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote GIS Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote GIS Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript, or C#), expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), and a relevant degree in computer science, geography, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS platforms like ArcGIS or QGIS, as well as experience with spatial databases and APIs, are typically required, and certifications such as Esri Technical Certification can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills ensure effective development, integration, and maintenance of GIS solutions while enabling seamless teamwork and timely project completion in a remote work environment.

Job description

The Senior Forward Deployed Engineer serves as the technical lead responsible for the architecture, ontology design, application delivery, operational support, and overall platform health of critical Palantir Foundry environments supporting utility operations.

This role partners directly with utility stakeholders, operational users, and engineering teams to deliver and sustain mission-critical operational capabilities supporting wildfire mitigation, Public Safety Power Shutoff operations, and regulatory reporting requirements.

The Senior Forward Deployed Engineer independently owns complex implementation efforts from design through production support, mentors junior engineers, and ensures solutions remain scalable, supportable, and aligned to enterprise governance standards.

*This is a remote role, with occasional onsite support required in Los Angeles, CA. Candidates must reside in or near Los Angeles, CA and be able to report onsite as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain ontology-driven applications within Palantir Foundry supporting Public Safety Power Shutoff operations and utility decision-making.
  • Develop and enhance Workshop applications, operational dashboards, workflows, and Actions used by field operations, customer operations, and executive leadership.
  • Design and govern enterprise ontology objects, relationships, and business logic supporting multiple operational use cases.
  • Implement and maintain data pipelines integrating SAP, OMS, GIS, weather, customer, and operational systems.
  • Support production operations, incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis during critical operational events.
  • Participate in operational readiness exercises, tabletop events, and production support activities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate operational requirements into scalable Foundry solutions.
  • Develop governance processes supporting ontology lifecycle management, object reuse, and platform scalability.
  • Support deployment promotion, release management, testing coordination, and environment governance.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, architecture diagrams, and support procedures.
  • Mentor engineers on ontology design, Workshop development, operational architecture, and Foundry best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise with Palantir Foundry Ontology Manager, Workshop, Actions, Pipeline Builder, and operational application development.
  • 6+ years of software engineering or systems integration experience.
  • Experience supporting production operational platforms with strict uptime and response requirements.
  • Experience with Python, TypeScript, or Java within Foundry development workflows.
  • Familiarity with utility operations, wildfire mitigation, public safety operations, outage management, asset management, customer operations, or regulatory reporting environments.
  • Experience designing enterprise ontologies and governing reusable data models across multiple applications.
  • Experience integrating ERP, GIS, operational, and enterprise systems into Foundry.
  • Experience supporting utility, energy, infrastructure, emergency management, public safety, or other operational environments.
  • Experience participating in on-call rotations or supporting mission-critical production systems.
  • Strong understanding of operational governance, release management, and platform support models.
  • Ability to own the full feature lifecycle from architecture through build, test, and deployment.

Additional Preferred Experience:

  • Experience supporting Palantir Foundry implementations exceeding 50+ ontology objects and multiple operational applications.
  • Experience conducting ontology reviews, governance assessments, and platform architecture evaluations.
  • Experience working directly with executive stakeholders, operations teams, and enterprise architecture organizations.
