What is a remote geospatial developer?

A Remote Geospatial Developer is a software developer who specializes in building applications that process, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. They work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing data, and mapping technologies to create solutions across industries such as environmental science, urban planning, and logistics. This role typically involves programming in languages like Python, JavaScript, or SQL, and using tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine. Since the job is remote, developers collaborate with teams and clients virtually using communication and project management tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote geospatial developer?

To thrive as a Remote Geospatial Developer, you need a solid background in GIS principles, spatial data analysis, and programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, typically supported by a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, and cloud-based mapping platforms, as well as relevant certifications such as Esri Technical Certifications, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are critical soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure accurate project delivery, seamless teamwork across distributed teams, and the ability to quickly adapt to evolving geospatial technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by remote geospatial developers, and how are they typically addressed?

Remote Geospatial Developers often encounter challenges such as managing large spatial datasets, integrating data from multiple sources, and ensuring accuracy in map visualizations. Collaboration across time zones and communicating complex spatial concepts to non-technical stakeholders can also be demanding. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems, detailed documentation, and regular virtual meetings to stay aligned. Ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest GIS tools further help remote developers tackle technical hurdles efficiently. Effective teamwork and strong project management practices are key to successfully navigating these challenges.

Job description

About the role and team

We're hiring a Senior Product Designer for the Uber Direct & Connect on-demand delivery team. Uber Direct & Connect helps both consumers and SMBs get anything delivered, from dry cleaning drop-offs and retail returns to custom shopping lists and cross-country deliveries.

As a Senior Product designer for Uber Direct & Connect, you'll help build one of Uber's fastest-growing independent lines of business and will have the unique opportunity to work across three sides of the delivery marketplace, providing consumers and businesses around the world with access to our best-in-class logistics network. You'll be responsible for defining the future of Connect, driving more affordable, flexible delivery options, and building features to accelerate our expansion to new markets.

What you'll do

  • Lead human-centered experience design for high-impact domains, defining new interaction patterns and service models where none exist today.
  • Own design problems end-to-end, from early-stage research and conceptual wireframes to high-fidelity prototypes and final production-ready assets.
  • Partner as a key thought leader with Product, Engineering, and Operations to define requirements and shape the strategic roadmap, not just translate them into mocks.
  • Design across digital and physical touchpoints, translating complex logistical and technical systems into clear, intuitive flows for mobile, web, and vehicle interfaces.
  • Maintain and evolve Uber's design language by contributing to shared systems and foundational patterns that ensure consistency across global platforms.
  • Prototype rapidly to test hypotheses and validate ideas early, using data and user research to iterate and raise the bar for quality and trustworthiness.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional product design experience, with a track record of shipping successful digital products for mobile and web.
  • A portfolio showcasing high-quality design work, strong systems thinking, and a deep understanding of user-centered design principles.
  • Proficiency with Figma and a range of prototyping tools to bring complex ideas to life.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity and lead design direction in fast-paced, evolving environments.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to articulate design rationale to technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in frontier or complex domains such as Autonomous Systems, AdTech, Fintech, or Enterprise/Operational tools.
  • Experience designing across physical and digital touchpoints, including geospatial or location-aware systems.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with user researchers and data scientists to drive experimentation and A/B testing.
  • Advanced degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Experience building and implementing components within a global, scalable design system.
