A Brief Summary of This Position:

Valmont is seeking a talented individual to join our growing data science team within our shared services division. This position will write production level code, collect data, and generate predictions for various business units at Valmont Industries. Other tasks include hypothesis testing, cleaning large datasets, creating machine-learning models, and automating various processes. While in this role, you will help guide and implement data pipelines from data collection to creating interactive dashboards for stakeholders. This position will also be tasked with thinking outside the box with innovative solutions to traditional problems. The data scientist will also be responsible with sharing best practices and trainings to the rest of the organization.

Essential Functions:

  • This role requires up to 10-15% travel domestically, including overnight stays

  • Use code (Python or R) to solve problems with guidance from business leaders

  • Build and test machine learning models with open source and internally built tools

  • Take on ad hoc projects as business needs change

  • Optimize and assist development of current projects

  • Assist with the development of automation processes

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Collaborate with other data scientists, subject matter experts, and data engineers to develop new data products

  • Collect third party and experimental data via APIs, web scraping, etc.

  • Research cutting edge and emerging technologies that can improve current business processes

  • Construct dynamic dashboards to present insights to stakeholders (Power BI, Tableau, or Plotly)

  • Test theories against data to help the business make sound decisions

  • Train peers on best data science practices and help cultivate a 'data-driven' culture

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Preferred Bachelor's or Associate's Degree with 3+ years relevant experience or 5+ years of relevant experience in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Finance, or any quantitative discipline

  • Proficient in python or R; SQL a plus

  • Understanding of data warehouses and relational databases

  • Experience with regression, classification, and applied statistics/probability

  • Knowledge of implementing and maintaining machine learning algorithms

  • Ability to communicate complex insights to a general audience

  • Enthusiasm to research and apply data science concepts

  • Comfortable taking ambiguous ideas and turning them into data-driven solutions

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in a quantitative discipline

  • Experience working with financial data or in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience with the Databricks platform
