Job description

Overview

Kimley-Horn's Charlotte office is growing, and we're looking for a Mechanical or Civil EI/EIT to join our Energy & Natural Gas team. This role is ideal for an engineer who wants to work on large-scale, real-world infrastructure projects while continuing to build technical depth, project ownership, and cross-discipline experience.

You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers to deliver complex energy and natural gas projects across multiple markets and geographies. From major pipeline systems to control stations and power generation facilities, this role offers hands-on involvement in projects that keep communities and industries running.Location: Charlotte, NCExperience Level: 2-6 yearsTeam: Energy & Natural GasWork Model: In-office

ResponsibilitiesWhat You'll Work On

You'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from early design through construction documentation, with opportunities to take on increasing responsibility over time.

Project Types Include:

  • Transmission and distribution pipeline systems
  • Metering and regulation stations
  • Remote valve sites
  • Natural gas generation and power plant facilities

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Performing engineering design, calculations, and analyses for complex natural gas projects
  • Developing construction drawings and technical details for multidisciplinary designs
  • Applying applicable codes and standards (including 49 CFR Part 192 and ASME B31.8)
  • Assisting with project planning, schedules, and budgets
  • Coordinating with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders
  • Participating in client meetings and supporting quality control efforts
QualificationsWhat We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering
  • 2 - 6 years of relevant engineering design experience in natural gas, energy, or oil & gas
  • Working knowledge of industry codes and standards (49 CFR Part 192, ASME B31.3/8)
  • Experience producing engineering plans, calculations, and construction documents
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and CADWORX
  • Ability to manage tasks, prioritize work, and collaborate across teams

Preferred (But Not Required):

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or F.E. and progressing towards P.E.
  • Exposure to project management or task leadership
  • Experience with permitting, agency coordination, and regulatory compliance
