Job description

The Director, Power Delivery will report to the Vice President, Power Delivery and will be responsible for developing and executing on near-term and long-term strategies to help the Development team integrate data center projects. The Director will be responsible for managing contractors, managing and reviewing consultant studies, supporting the development team related to generation and transmission needs and managing relationships with various external stakeholders.

The Director will also support new corporate priorities and initiatives such as internal process improvements, exploring new markets, support energy procurement efforts, and support any regulatory/policy advocacy with external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have experience with owning and managing external relationships, experience in the energy industry – in particular power plant, transmission, or substation construction, load interconnection processes, the ability to translate and communicate technical issues to non-technical team members, and a strong ability to identify issues and provide problem solving strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of power projects for data centers (on site or collocated generation facilities, site power upgrades, new substations, feeders switchgear, generator/UPS/BESS installations, utility interconnections).
  • Manage the construction contractors and serve as a primary point of contact with the utility and other contractors for the data center projects
  • Own, cultivate and manage utility relationships and foster a collaborative relationship
  • Document power plant, transmission, and substation construction process as it relates to any financial commitments, cost responsibilities, duration of the various steps of the process, and understands when power commitments are secured during the process
  • Support reviews of any utility contracts related to the project
  • Forecast and manage schedules and budgets for assigned projects
  • Ensure all power delivery designs meet client performance, reliability (99.9%, 99.99%, 99.999%), power quality, and redundancy (N, N+1, 2N) requirements and complies with local code, NFPA, IEEE, and utility standards
  • Work closely with development team to develop the business case for each project
  • Support review and vetting of potential datacenter sites to assess viability of power delivery timeframes, both from the utility and on site
  • Provide proactive, in-field problem solving to ensure successful delivery of power to data center campuses
  • Identify and develop new near-term and long-term strategies in conjunction with the Vice President, Power Delivery to continually improve internal processes (i.e. workflows, communications, presentation of deliverables.
  • Develop an understanding of the planning practices of the utilities and ISO/RTO in assigned geographical regions, which may include reviewing planning processes, modeling assumptions, understanding cost recovery and cost-allocation principles, and generation/load interconnection processes
  • Support relationship management with the utilities and RTO/ISOs to support project-specific efforts including initial site due diligence, review of initial interconnection requests and subsequent studies, identify potential alternative generation and transmission solutions where there are constraints
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Energy and Policy teams to work with external stakeholders to create new processes or improve existing processes to support data center integration (i.e. planning process improvements, interconnection queue reform)
  • Prepare presentations, track market activity, and provide weekly and biweekly reports
  • Collaborate with other business units supporting Corporate Data Center Development as necessary, including preconstruction, supply chain, design and engineering, sales, legal, and tax
  • Aid in the preparation of business cases and recommendations for leadership approval

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science, Engineering, BSEE, Construction Management or similar preferred
  • 8-10+ years of energy industry experience (with a utility, consulting engineering or EPC firm, renewable energy company, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office product suite
  • Strong analytical, detail-oriented, creative thinking, and communication skills
  • Comfortable creating processes and implementing strategies and procedures that serve an organization.
  • Ability to execute, process, and prioritize tasks with minimal-to-no supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.
