Job description

SOFTWARE ENGINEER — CLINICAL AUTOMATION & PLATFORM WE'RE SENIOR DEVELOPMENT

Cole Neural Institute is looking for a permanent software engineer to take ownership of a clinical automation system we've built the core logic for — and then help us turn it into a full platform.

About the system
We've developed the Cole Neurologic Method, a proprietary clinical approach combining qEEG-based neuroassessment, neurofeedback, cognitive coaching, psychometric assessments, physiological data, and longitudinal outcomes tracking. We've spent the last phase building and clinically validating the scoring logic — the rules that turn raw EEG, survey, and physiological data into clinician-ready findings — against a real client cohort. That logic currently lives in a rigorously documented, formula-driven specification (built in Excel as an explainable reference model) and is ready to be engineered into production software.

This is a build-from-a-validated-spec opportunity, not a blank-page one and not an inherited-mess one: the clinical rules are defined, tested, and documented; what's needed now is an engineer who can translate them into a real, secure, maintainable system.

Our long-range vision is a complete "Clinic in a Box": a secure, plug-and-play platform enabling qualified practitioners and clinics worldwide to implement and deliver our method consistently.

Primary Responsibilities

Immediate Priorities

  • Review and understand the existing codebase, automation workflows, technical documentation, databases, spreadsheets, integrations, and reporting systems.
  • Complete and stabilize the automation currently under development.
  • Translate CNI’s proprietary clinical rules, formulas, thresholds, scoring models, and decision pathways into accurate and auditable software logic.
  • Automate the ingestion, validation, scoring, and reporting of psychometric, qEEG, physiological, wearable, and clinical data.
  • Build safeguards to identify missing, inconsistent, incorrectly formatted, or clinically improbable data.
  • Develop repeatable testing procedures for every scoring engine, formula, integration, and report.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and provide dependable ongoing support.
  • Document the system sufficiently so that its operation does not depend on undocumented knowledge held by one person.
  • Work closely with CNI’s founder, clinical team, neurotechnology staff, management, and outside development partners.

Platform Development

  • Help design and build the CNI “Clinic in a Box” platform for use by independent practitioners and clinics.
  • Develop practitioner dashboards, client records, assessment workflows, treatment-planning tools, scoring summaries, progress reports, and administrative controls.
  • Create a scalable, multi-clinic architecture with appropriate separation of organizations, users, permissions, and client data.
  • Design secure APIs and integrations with external platforms, wearable devices, EEG systems, survey systems, CRM platforms, cloud storage, and future CNI applications.
  • Convert evolving clinical methodologies into configurable and version-controlled rules engines.
  • Ensure that scoring results can be traced back to their source data, formula version, thresholds, and intermediate calculations.
  • Develop deployment, monitoring, backup, error-reporting, and recovery procedures.
  • Support platform updates without disrupting active clinics or compromising historical results.
  • Help create tools for practitioner onboarding, training, licensing, quality assurance, and remote support.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, development priorities, vendor selection, and product planning.

Data, Security, and Quality

  • Apply privacy-by-design and security-by-design principles throughout the system.
  • Help establish appropriate safeguards for sensitive health and personally identifiable information.
  • Support HIPAA-conscious architecture, access controls, audit logs, encryption, backups, data-retention practices, and incident-response procedures.
  • Maintain clear separation between proprietary clinical intellectual property and general platform functionality.
  • Build automated testing for clinical calculations, data pipelines, integrations, permissions, and user workflows.
  • Maintain version control for formulas and scoring systems so historical assessments remain reproducible after methodologies evolve.
  • Participate in formal validation of scoring results against clinician-reviewed test cases.

Current and Anticipated Technology Environment

CNI’s environment currently or potentially includes:

  • Cloud-based databases, services, and storage, including AWS
  • Python and/or comparable back-end development technologies
  • Modern web application and front-end frameworks
  • REST APIs, webhooks, and third-party integrations
  • Spreadsheet-based prototypes and calculation engines being converted into production software
  • Practice Better, HubSpot, Microsoft 365, Google services, and related business platforms
  • EEG systems, including OpenBCI-based hardware and data
  • Physiological and wearable data, including heart rate, HRV, EDA, temperature, movement, sleep, and related measurements
  • CSV, JSON, structured assessment data, and automated document/report generation
  • Git-based version control, automated testing, deployment, logging, and monitoring

Candidates are not expected to have used every system listed above. Strong systems thinking, technical versatility, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies are more important than matching a rigid checklist.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong professional experience in full-stack software development.
  • Experience building and maintaining production applications—not only prototypes.
  • Strong knowledge of back-end development, databases, APIs, integrations, and data-processing workflows.
  • Ability to understand complex rules and translate them into accurate, testable, maintainable software.
  • Experience diagnosing and supporting systems after deployment.
  • Understanding of software architecture, security, authentication, permissions, backups, logging, and monitoring.
  • Experience with version control, code review, testing, deployment, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to work directly with nontechnical subject-matter experts and convert their methodology into clear technical requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly where small calculation or data-mapping errors could materially affect results.
  • Ability to take ownership, prioritize competing needs, and communicate risks and progress clearly.
  • Willingness to work in a changing, entrepreneurial environment where the product and the organization are growing together.

What we're looking for
Strong full-stack development experience, comfort with databases and APIs, a track record of maintaining real production systems, and the ability to convert complex subject-matter rules into clean, testable, auditable software.

Experience in healthcare technology, AWS, Python, SaaS platforms, data processing, automated reporting, security/HIPAA-compliant systems, wearables, physiological data, or qEEG technology is valuable — but we care just as much about intelligence, judgment, precision, curiosity, and ownership.

This role works directly with CNI's founder, clinical team, neurotechnology staff, and executive leadership, with the opportunity to become a foundational technical leader shaping both the platform and the company.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with others required.
