Search & Comparison IntentYesYes

Remote Freshman Internships in Computer Science focus on providing entry-level experience for students new to the field, often with minimal prior coding. Remote Software Development Internships typically require some coding knowledge and involve more technical tasks. Both are remote, industry-relevant, and serve as stepping stones for a career in tech, but they differ in prerequisites and project complexity.

Are there remote computer science internships?

Yes, many companies offer remote computer science internships, including roles for freshmen and students with limited experience. These internships often involve skills in programming, software development, and collaboration tools, and may be available year-round or seasonally. Applicants should check company websites for specific remote internship opportunities and requirements.

How to get computer science internships as a freshman?

To secure a computer science internship as a freshman, focus on building strong programming skills in languages like Python or Java, participate in coding competitions or projects, and seek out internship programs or research opportunities that accept underclassmen. Gaining relevant experience through personal projects, open-source contributions, or certifications can also improve your chances. Applying early and networking with professors or industry professionals can provide valuable opportunities.

Which internship is best for a computer science student?

The best internship for a computer science student depends on their interests and career goals, but generally, internships at technology companies or research labs that offer hands-on experience with programming, software development, or data analysis are highly valuable. Look for roles that provide mentorship, exposure to real-world projects, and opportunities to learn relevant tools like Python, Java, or cloud platforms. These internships can enhance skills, build a professional network, and improve job prospects after graduation.

  • Track software development schedules, milestones, risks, and deliverables.
  • Provide regular project status updates to Program Office leadership.
  • Coordinate with systems, hardware, test, and integration engineers throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Support software integration, verification, validation, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and software documentation.
  • Assist with software deployment and system integration activities as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience developing systems or application software using C and C++.
  • Experience throughout the software development lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, integration, testing, and maintenance).
  • Understanding of software architecture and system integration principles.
  • Experience with serial communication protocols (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, UART, etc.).
  • Experience with IP networking and communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet).
  • Experience coordinating software development activities, schedules, and technical progress.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with technical teams and program management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving as a software technical lead or software development lead.
  • Embedded systems or real-time software development experience.
  • Experience integrating software with hardware systems.

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and pass FAA security screening for positions of Public Trust.
