Remote Freelance Writer information

What is a remote freelance writer?

A remote freelance writer is a professional who creates written content—such as articles, blog posts, marketing materials, or technical documents—while working independently from a location of their choice, rather than at a client's office. They typically work with multiple clients on a project or contract basis, managing their own schedules and assignments. Remote freelance writers often pitch ideas, meet deadlines, and communicate with clients primarily through email or online platforms. This role offers flexibility, but also requires self-discipline, good time management, and strong writing skills. Compensation can vary depending on experience, niche, and the type of work performed.

What does a remote freelance writer do?

As a remote freelance writer, you work from home to create written content for digital and print mediums. In this independent contract role, you may research information, write blog posts and articles, help write a book, update a website or social media outlet, and provide input on content for a publication. You often work through agencies that find clients and assign content for you to write, but it is also possible to work directly with the client to produce and edit content. The material you write could be as short as a few hundred words or as long as hundreds of pages, depending on the contract. You typically write longer material in stages so it can be edited and reviewed piece by piece.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote freelance writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Freelance Writer, you need excellent writing, research, and grammar skills, typically supported by a strong portfolio or relevant degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (like WordPress), SEO tools, and collaboration platforms is often required. Strong self-motivation, time management, and communication skills help build client relationships and meet deadlines. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality content, client satisfaction, and sustainable success in a competitive freelance market.

How do remote freelance writers typically manage communication and feedback with clients who are in different time zones?

Remote freelance writers often work with clients from various locations, which requires clear communication strategies to ensure timely feedback and project updates. Most writers rely on email, project management tools, and messaging platforms to stay in touch, often setting expectations for response times and deadlines upfront. It's common to schedule regular check-ins or use collaborative documents for ongoing feedback. Being proactive about clarifying requirements and maintaining transparent communication helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps projects on track.

Job description

Oh, hello there, storyteller.

Funday is a full-service agency. We're a talented and entrepreneurial group of people who believe it pays to have fun. Great work takes a balance of creativity and performance. Imagination and insight. Fun and brains. We believe in making great work.

Copywriter

As a Copywriter you will report directly to the Associate Creative Director and work closely with the creative team. We are growing quickly and need another set of hands to help with the ever-expanding workload. Your role will be varied and may change from day to day. One minute you'll be writing a social media post and the next you'll be working on a brand campaign. We're a small group scattered around the globe and everyone gets their hands dirty. You'll always be part of a team that has a passion for great work, including creatives, strategists, technologists, and producers who will help you push the work forward.

Location: You'll work remotely from BC, AB, or ON.

What you'll do

  • Develop an understanding of business objectives and audience demographics to create targeted content for our clients
  • Process information supplied by internal and external stakeholders and translate it into effective creative work
  • Translate creative direction and copy points from creative briefs into engaging and effective copy concepts
  • Write posts, scripts, and long form copy for a range of media and online/offline formats
  • Maintain high standards of copywriting
  • Write headlines that will make any parent proud

What you'll need to succeed

  • 3-5 years in a copywriting role
  • Digital copywriting experience
  • Experience working in an agency environment is an asset
  • Portfolio demonstrating your copywriting and storytelling craft - digital work samples are preferred
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate an outstanding degree of accuracy and attention to detail in all work
  • Ability to write in a range of voices and styles for varied projects with diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and juggle diverse writing demands
  • Ability to concept ideas based off of strong insights

You'll want to read this part

  • Portfolio required: no portfolio, no consideration.
  • If you live in Canada, are able to work here, and you are in one of these provinces: BC, AB or ON - please apply! Otherwise, we're sorry, we're not set up to support staff outside of these regions.
  • Please note: we post the same role in multiple locations to help us cast a wide net. Applying to each location for a posting will not increase your chances. Now that we've saved you some time, go do something fun!
  • This posting is for an existing vacancy we are looking to fill immediately and not a prospective future role (i.e. we're saying this isn't a ghost job)

Come be a Funatic

We believe you won't perform at your best if you're not having fun. And you can't have fun if you're not performing. We believe this creates the best client + agency relationships and is the best way to make great work.

We believe in respect, inclusivity, kindness, equity, and equality. We want to make a positive impact. We believe that collaboration is the fun part of being at work. We strive to create a culture in which "we" is more important than "me".
Apart from loving terrible, fun puns, we're young, and we're growing fast - which means you'll have a chance to make your mark and grow with us. We're also almost 100% remote, and that might not appeal to everyone - but if you value flexibility, it's perfect.
