What is remote forensic science?

A Remote Forensic Science job involves analyzing forensic evidence, writing reports, and providing expert opinions from a remote location. These roles often include digital forensics, reviewing case files, or consulting on forensic investigations. Professionals may work for law enforcement, private firms, or legal teams, using specialized software and databases. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and knowledge of forensic methodologies are essential.

What types of cases or evidence do remote forensic scientists typically work on?

Remote forensic scientists often analyze digital evidence related to cybercrimes, fraud, data breaches, or other legal matters involving electronic devices. Their work may include processing and interpreting data from computers, mobile devices, and networks, as well as preparing detailed reports for law enforcement or court proceedings. Collaboration with legal teams, law enforcement, and other forensic professionals is common, typically conducted through secure online platforms. While some tasks can be independent, regular communication and documentation are essential to ensure chain of custody and data integrity. This role provides the opportunity to contribute directly to critical investigations from a flexible, remote work setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote forensic science?

To thrive in Remote Forensic Science, you need a strong background in forensic analysis, evidence handling, and a relevant degree in forensic science or a related field. Familiarity with digital forensic tools, case management software, and industry certifications such as Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) or similar are highly valued. Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear written communication are crucial for remote collaboration and accurate reporting. These skills ensure that forensic investigations are thorough, credible, and effectively coordinated across virtual teams.

Can you work from home as a remote forensic science?

Remote forensic science roles are limited because the job often requires physical examination of evidence, laboratory work, and on-site analysis. However, some positions involving data analysis, report writing, or consulting can be performed remotely with appropriate digital tools and secure data access.

Is there a high demand for remote forensic science?

Remote forensic science jobs are increasingly in demand as technology advances, allowing forensic analysts to work from home or remote locations. Employers seek professionals with skills in digital forensics, evidence analysis, and familiarity with forensic tools, with remote work opportunities growing in law enforcement agencies, private labs, and consulting firms.

Job description

TheArgonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is seeking a Staff Scientist - Agents for Science to help pioneer AI systems that can reason, plan, act, and collaborate in support of scientific discovery. AI for science is entering a new phase. Beyond models that analyze data or make predictions, there is growing opportunity to develop agentic AI systems that can interact with scientific data, simulations, instruments, workflows, and knowledge sources in more adaptive and autonomous ways. At ALCF, we are exploring how such systems can help scientists formulate hypotheses, design experiments, navigate complex data, coordinate computational workflows, and accelerate discovery across disciplines.

This role is an opportunity to work at the frontier ofagentic AI, foundation models, scientific workflows, and high-performance computing, and contribute to the Department of Energy's Genesis mission. We are looking for a creative and collaborative staff scientist/engineer who wants to develop novel methods and systems for AI agents in scientific environments and deploy them at the scale required by real scientific challenges. You will join the AI group-a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and work alongside experts in AI, simulation, computer science, applied mathematics, and domain science.

Your work may include:

  • Designing and developingagentic AI systemsfor scientific discovery, including systems that can reason, plan, retrieve information, invoke tools, and execute multi-step scientific tasks
  • Developing agents that can interact withsimulation workflows, data pipelines, scientific software, instruments, knowledge bases, and computational tools
  • Building methods for tool use, workflow orchestration, memory, planning, adaptation, and decision-making in scientific environments
