Remote Food Illustration information

What is remote food illustration?

Remote food illustration is the process of creating artistic visual representations of food items or culinary scenes while working from a location outside a traditional office or studio, often from home. Food illustrators use digital tools or traditional media to produce images for cookbooks, magazines, advertisements, packaging, and websites. Working remotely, these artists communicate with clients and deliver their work electronically, offering flexibility and access to a global client base. This job requires artistic skill, attention to detail, and familiarity with digital illustration software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote food illustrator?

To thrive as a Remote Food Illustrator, you need strong artistic ability, a solid understanding of food aesthetics, and experience with digital illustration, often supported by a portfolio or a degree in art or design. Proficiency in digital illustration tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting client briefs and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure visually appealing, accurate representations of food that meet client expectations and support branding or marketing goals.

What are some common challenges faced by remote food illustrators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote food illustrators often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients regarding style preferences, revisions, and deadlines, since all interactions are virtual. Additionally, managing time across multiple projects and securing accurate visual references can be demanding. To address these, illustrators should establish regular check-ins with clients, use project management tools, and create a well-organized digital portfolio. Building a reliable workflow and staying updated with industry trends can also help remote food illustrators stand out and succeed.

Job description

Magic Spoon is looking for a versatile and collaborative Designer or Senior Designer to join our Creative team.
This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys variety, takes meaningful ownership of their work, and is comfortable adapting as priorities evolve. The work will span digital marketing, brand design, product launches, retail, shopper marketing, social, email, web, packaging, sales materials, and other creative needs across the business.
One of the first major opportunities will be helping bring Magic Spoon's upcoming redesign to life beyond the box. Our new packaging system is finalized, and this person will help translate that foundation into a broader visual expression across marketing and consumer touchpoints.
This person will partner closely with Brand Marketing, Growth, Sales, Product, and Operations teams to turn business needs into thoughtful, effective creative. They should be open to feedback, comfortable working through ambiguity, and able to move projects forward with a high level of independence.
We are also looking for someone who is curious about evolving creative tools, including AI, and interested in using them thoughtfully alongside photography, illustration, styling, and traditional production.
Packaging experience is a plus, but it is not required. An openness to learning print-specific file builds is important as this role will support packaging design of new flavors, retail print support, and new product formats. Strong design fundamentals, flexibility, sound creative judgment, and a genuine willingness to learn matter most.
This role reports to the Associate Creative Director and is open to remote candidates, as well as hybrid candidates based in New York City (up to 3 days per week in office, Tribeca).
What You'll Do
  • Create on-brand work across digital, retail, shopper, social, email, web, paid media, sales materials, presentations, packaging, and other channels.
  • Help extend Magic Spoon's redesigned packaging into a broader visual system for the brand.
  • Lead assigned projects from kickoff through final delivery, including concepting, execution, feedback, and support production.
  • Help shape briefs, clarify direction, and identify practical creative solutions when projects are still taking form.
  • Manage timelines, files, feedback, and deliverables with strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and communicate creative rationale clearly.
  • Adapt to changing priorities while maintaining quality and momentum.
  • Support photography, illustration, video, rendering, and AI-assisted creative projects.
  • Work with freelancers, photographers, illustrators, stylists, food stylists, printers, and other external partners as needed.
  • Prepare production-ready files and support internal packaging proofing, retouching, renders, and final assets.
Who You Are
  • A designer with approximately 4 to 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, and comfortable working across a wide range of projects.
  • Collaborative, low-ego, and receptive to feedback from different teams and perspectives.
  • Able to work independently while knowing when to ask for input.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity, shifting priorities, and multiple projects at once.
  • Excited by typography, layout, color, composition, imagery, and brand systems.
  • Curious about new tools, processes, and creative approaches.
  • A clear communicator with strong attention to detail and a high standard for execution.

Requirements
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating a strong understanding of typography, layout, visual storytelling, and brand systems.
  • Experience creating work across both digital and physical channels.
  • Expert proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; familiarity with After Effects, Premiere Pro, CapCut, or similar motion/video editing tools a plus.
  • Experience designing for social media, email marketing, paid media, websites; designing for packaging and print production a plus.
  • Strong design skills and organized file-management habits.
  • Experience working within an established brand identity while helping it evolve.
  • Highly collaborative, resourceful, and proactive.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in consumer, food and beverage, retail, lifestyle, wellness, or e-commerce.
  • Experience with shopper marketing, retail displays, or point-of-sale materials.
  • Art direction experience across photography, illustration, rendering, or video.
  • Motion design, animation, video editing, or illustration skills.
  • Packaging design or packaging production experience.
  • Familiarity with AI-supported creative tools, or an interest in learning them.
  • An eye for capturing appetizing, polished short-form product videos at home for paid and organic marketing.
  • Experience developing brand guidelines, templates, or design systems.
  • Experience working in Asana or a similar project-management platform.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary & equity
  • Bonus eligibility
  • 100% covered Health, Vision, Dental insurance (50% covered for dependents)
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous parental leave
  • Flexible vacation
  • Paid company holidays
  • Paid sick leave
  • Catered lunch in office
  • Dog friendly office
  • Unlimited cereal
