To thrive as a Remote Firmware Engineer, you need a strong background in embedded systems, programming languages like C/C++, and hardware-software integration, often supported by a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), debugging tools, and common microcontroller platforms is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure efficient development, troubleshooting, and collaboration on complex firmware projects across distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote firmware engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote firmware engineers often encounter challenges such as debugging hardware issues without physical access, coordinating with hardware teams in different locations, and ensuring secure firmware deployment. These challenges can be addressed by using remote debugging tools, maintaining clear documentation, and scheduling regular virtual meetings with cross-functional teams. Additionally, leveraging simulation environments and continuous integration systems helps streamline development and testing processes, making remote collaboration more effective.

What are Remote Firmware Engineers?

Job description

Hi, weareecobee.

ecobee introduced the world's first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.

In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do whatwe do:

We're helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact onthe planet. Ourproducts and serviceswork in harmonytoprovide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we're proud of what we've done so far, there's still a lot we can do-and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with an office in Leeds, UK, and remote ecopeeps in the US. We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We're always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Who You'll be Joining:

Our hive, headquartered in Toronto, is looking for a Staff Product Manager to help lead the evolution of ecobee's Smart Security business - shaping how our devices and services come together to deliver a seamless, high-value customer experience. Our Smart Security business is building a holistic home monitoring portfolio: doorbells, cameras, sensors, and security services and features (including professional monitoring) that are powered by a scalable platform and ecosystem.

You will bring deep experience in building and shipping hardware products, alongside a strong understanding of how those devices power differentiated service experiences. You'll partner closely with Hardware Engineering, Firmware, Mobile, Backend, Design, Data, and go-to-market teams to define and deliver integrated solutions that drive both customer value and business outcomes - especially across activation, engagement, and subscription growth.

You'll operate as a senior product leader - owning complex, cross-functional problem spaces, setting direction across devices and services, and driving clarity in ambiguous, high-stakes decisions. This role sits at the intersection of physical products and digital experiences, requiring strong systems thinking and the ability to connect technical capabilities to customer and commercial impact.

At ecobee, Product Managers are expected to operate as builders, storytellers, and stewards of the business: we stay deeply connected to customer needs and delivery realities, we clarify and communicate the value of what we're building, and we take ownership for outcomes over the full product lifecycle.

[For Toronto/GTA Candidates only] This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

How You'll Make an Impact:

  • Own and evolve the product strategy across devices and services, ensuring tight integration between hardware capabilities and service experiences (e.g., onboarding, activation, subscription value, and retention).

  • Lead complex, cross-cutting initiatives that span device development and service growth, including funnel optimization, attach rate expansion, and lifecycle engagement.

  • Define how device capabilities (e.g., sensing, reliability, responsiveness) translate into differentiated service experiences and customer value propositions.

  • Drive end-to-end product development across hardware and services-from discovery through launch and iteration-ensuring clear problem definition and measurable outcomes.

  • Partner deeply with Engineering (hardware, firmware, mobile, backend), Design, Data, and GTM teams to align on priorities, navigate trade-offs, and deliver high-quality experiences.

  • Establish and own key success metrics across the funnel (e.g., conversion, activation, engagement, retention), using data to inform decisions and continuously optimize performance.

  • Lead customer discovery across both physical and digital experiences-understanding how customers adopt, use, and derive value from Smart Security products.

  • Influence broader portfolio and platform decisions by connecting device strategy with ecosystem, service monetization, and long-term customer value.

  • Act as a senior leader within the team-raising the bar on product thinking, mentoring others, and driving clarity in ambiguous, high-stakes situations.

  • Embody ecobee's expectation that PMs are builders, storytellers, and stewards-staying close to delivery, clarifying product value and narrative, and owning end-to-end outcomes across the lifecycle.

What You'll Bring to the Table:

  • 8-12+ years of product management experience, with strong experience in hardware/device products and meaningful exposure to services, subscriptions, or ecosystems.

  • Strong customer and market instincts paired with technical credibility-able to translate real customer needs into clear product direction and engineering-ready requirements.

  • Proven track record of shipping complex products that span hardware and software/service layers, with clear business impact.

  • Deep understanding of device development lifecycle (hardware, firmware, manufacturing constraints) and how it intersects with software and service experiences.

  • Strong product and business judgment-able to balance customer value, technical feasibility, and commercial outcomes (e.g., attach, retention, monetization).

  • Experience defining and optimizing growth funnels (activation, conversion, retention), ideally in a subscription or recurring revenue context.

  • Excellent cross-functional leadership skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and align teams across disciplines.

  • Highly analytical and structured thinker, with a strong bias toward action and continuous improvement.

  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and leading large, complex problem spaces with minimal direction.

  • Passion for building customer-centric products that integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
