The American Psychological Association (APA) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Film Editing Intern to support the development of short-form educational, informational, and promotional videos. These videos aim to communicate psychological science in ways that promote child and adolescent learning, development, and well-being.

This is a great opportunity for students passionate about storytelling, education, and media production to gain hands-on experience in a mission-driven organization.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Edit short videos using APA-provided footage, graphics, and audio
  • Collaborate with APA staff to shape compelling narratives from interviews and research content
  • Add titles, transitions, and basic motion graphics to enhance viewer engagement
  • Ensure final videos are optimized for web and social media platforms
  • Assist with organizing and archiving video assets
  • Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the intern’s university and the APA hiring team.

Expected Learning Objectives & Professional Advancement Opportunities:

  • Strengthen storytelling skills by transforming interview footage and research-based content into clear, engaging, and audience-centered narratives
  • Apply principles of digital media production to optimize video content for web and social media platforms, including pacing, formatting, and audience engagement strategies
  • Build collaboration and communication skills through iterative feedback cycles with cross-functional teams in a mission-driven organization
  • Gain experience in media asset management, including organizing, archiving, and maintaining video content for efficient production workflows

Required Qualifications:

  • Ideal Candidates Are:
    • Students studying Film, Television and Digital Media, Art and Design, Journalism, or Recording Arts and Production
    • Proficient in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro)
    • Comfortable working with audio, B-roll, and interview footage
    • Organized, communicative, and open to feedback
  • Preferred Skills (Not Required):
    • Experience with motion graphics or animation
    • Familiarity with captioning and accessibility standards
    • Interest in educational or nonprofit media
  • We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Master’s or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
