What is a remote field service engineer?

A Remote Field Service Engineer is a technical professional who provides installation, maintenance, repair, and support services for equipment or systems, often in locations away from their main office. Unlike traditional field engineers, they can diagnose and resolve many issues remotely using digital tools, phone, or video support, reducing the need for on-site visits. This role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients. They may also travel to customer sites when remote solutions are not feasible.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a remote field service engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Field Service Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering or electronics, troubleshooting expertise, and typically a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, remote monitoring systems, industry-specific software, and sometimes certifications like CompTIA A+ or OEM-specific credentials is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for this role. These skills enable timely issue resolution, effective remote support, and high customer satisfaction across diverse and dispersed environments.

How do remote field service engineers communicate and coordinate with on-site teams and clients?

Remote Field Service Engineers rely heavily on digital communication tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and remote diagnostic platforms to stay connected with on-site teams and clients. Coordination often involves scheduled check-ins, detailed documentation, and real-time troubleshooting to ensure smooth service delivery. Building strong communication skills and being proactive about updates are essential, as you'll frequently guide on-site personnel through technical tasks and problem resolution. This collaborative approach helps maintain service quality and fosters trust, despite the physical distance.

We are seeking Field Service Engineers / Machine Installation Technicians to join a growing team responsible for installing and supporting custom automated equipment at customer facilities throughout the United States.
This is a fully remote position, with a strong preference for candidates located in or around Indianapolis, Indiana. The role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, traveling to customer sites, and seeing complex machinery go from the shop floor to full installation and operation.

We are open to candidates at all experience levels, including experienced Machine Builders, Field Service Technicians, Installation Technicians, and Lead-level professionals.

What You'll Do
  • Perform complete mechanical and electrical installation of custom automated equipment at customer facilities.
  • Assemble, install, and assist with startup of complex machinery and automation systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and other equipment-related issues.
  • Work with customer teams and internal engineering personnel to complete installations safely and efficiently.
  • Use forklifts, rigging equipment, and other material-handling equipment to position and install machinery.
  • Support equipment startup, testing, and commissioning.
  • Maintain a professional presence while working directly with customers.
  • Travel to customer locations throughout Indiana and primarily the East Coast.
Travel & Schedule

  • Travel time is paid.
  • This is a remote position, so you can be based outside of Indianapolis; however, Indianapolis is the preferred location.
Compensation & Travel Benefits
  • Pay up to $45/hour, based on experience.
  • $7,200 annual vehicle allowance, paid bi-weekly.
  • Gas/fuel expenses can be expensed separately.
  • 1.5x overtime for hours worked between 40–60 per week.
  • 2x overtime for hours worked over 60 per week.
What We're Looking For
  • Experience with machine building, equipment installation, field service, or industrial automation.
  • Strong mechanical assembly and troubleshooting skills.
  • Electrical experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience with PLCs and controls is a plus.
  • Pneumatic system experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Comfortable working with tools, rigging, forklifts, and other equipment used during machine installation.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants the flexibility of a remote position without being tied to a traditional office or plant environment.
You'll work on custom automated equipment, travel to a variety of customer facilities, and gain exposure to complex machinery and automation projects—all while earning a competitive hourly rate with paid travel, a $7,200 vehicle allowance, reimbursed fuel, and significant overtime earning potential.
