What is a remote field service engineer?

A Remote Field Service Engineer is a technical professional who provides installation, maintenance, repair, and support services for equipment or systems, often in locations away from their main office. Unlike traditional field engineers, they can diagnose and resolve many issues remotely using digital tools, phone, or video support, reducing the need for on-site visits. This role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients. They may also travel to customer sites when remote solutions are not feasible.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a remote field service engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Field Service Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering or electronics, troubleshooting expertise, and typically a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, remote monitoring systems, industry-specific software, and sometimes certifications like CompTIA A+ or OEM-specific credentials is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for this role. These skills enable timely issue resolution, effective remote support, and high customer satisfaction across diverse and dispersed environments.

How do remote field service engineers communicate and coordinate with on-site teams and clients?

Remote Field Service Engineers rely heavily on digital communication tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and remote diagnostic platforms to stay connected with on-site teams and clients. Coordination often involves scheduled check-ins, detailed documentation, and real-time troubleshooting to ensure smooth service delivery. Building strong communication skills and being proactive about updates are essential, as you'll frequently guide on-site personnel through technical tasks and problem resolution. This collaborative approach helps maintain service quality and fosters trust, despite the physical distance.

  • Complete accurate service documentation, field reports, and expense reports.

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer satisfaction during every service visit.

  • Support customers throughout New Jersey, with occasional travel to other regions as business needs require.

Travel

  • Daily travel throughout New Jersey.

  • Routine overnight travel is approximately 10%, with occasional additional travel outside the region for training, customer support, or special projects.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in candidates who enjoy working with sophisticated equipment and have a passion for troubleshooting complex technical systems.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.

  • Military technical experience or trade school training may be considered in place of a degree.

  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.

  • Comfortable working with Windows-based computers and technical software.

  • Excellent organization, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Experience That Will Set You Apart

  • Previous field service experience.

  • Preventive or corrective maintenance on electro-mechanical or servo-hydraulic equipment.

  • Experience with materials testing systems.

  • Experience delivering technical training to customers in both hands-on and classroom settings.

  • Industrial automation or controls experience.

Why Instron?

At Instron, you'll work for a global technology leader while enjoying the flexibility and independence of a home-based field position. We invest heavily in technical training and professional development, giving our engineers the tools they need to succeed throughout their careers.

You'll have the opportunity to support leading companies across industries including aerospace, medical devices, automotive, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, and higher education, helping them ensure the safety and quality of the products used around the world.

If you're looking for a challenging role where your technical expertise directly impacts world-class manufacturers, we encourage you to apply.
