What is a remote FastAPI developer?

A Remote FastAPI Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building web APIs using the FastAPI framework, while working remotely from any location. FastAPI is a modern, high-performance Python web framework used to create APIs quickly and efficiently. Remote FastAPI Developers design, implement, and maintain backend services, typically collaborating with distributed teams through online communication and project management tools. Their responsibilities often include writing clean, scalable code, integrating databases, and ensuring API security and performance.

What are common challenges remote FastAPI developers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote FastAPI Developers frequently work with colleagues across different time zones and communication styles, which can make real-time collaboration and code reviews more challenging. Staying aligned on project requirements, API design standards, and deployment schedules often requires proactive communication and thorough documentation. Using tools like version control, issue trackers, and asynchronous messaging helps bridge these gaps, but developers must be disciplined about keeping everyone updated and clarifying technical decisions. Building strong remote working habits and establishing clear processes with your team can greatly improve collaboration and project outcomes.

About the job

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of innovative, scalable, and secure healthcare technology solutions. In this role, you will provide technical leadership across key projects, work with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful products, and mentor engineers to ensure the highest technical standards are met. You will play a key role in advancing our mission to improve patient care and outcomes through technology.

This position is remote and requires working Pacific Coast business hours (PST).

What you'll do

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Architect, design, and lead the development of scalable, high-performance systems using event-driven architectures (e.g., Apache Kafka, Airflow, Flink) and distributed systems.

  • Champion best practices in system design, code quality, CI/CD pipelines, and observability (e.g., DataDog, Kibana).System Design & Execution

System Design & Execution

  • Own end-to-end delivery of mission-critical products, from concept to deployment, including:

    • Real-time data pipelines: design and implement event-streaming and ETL flows that process millions of records per second with low latency.

    • Batch & streaming hybrid architectures: leverage tools like Kafka Streams, Flink, and Spark Streaming.

    • Healthcare data integration: ingest, transform, and serve FHIR, CCDA, HL7 V2/V3, and other clinical document standards at scale.

    • Microservices & customer-facing applications: build resilient, API-driven services with robust versioning and backward compatibility.

  • Optimize system performance (e.g., API latency reduction, error-rate minimization) through distributed caching, code refactoring, and infrastructure improvements.

  • Design fault-tolerant, cloud-native solutions (AWS, Kubernetes) with a focus on resilience, cost efficiency, and scalability.

  • Lead migration/modernization efforts (e.g., legacy system rewrites, data lake/warehouse implementations) while ensuring seamless customer transitions.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Partner with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions, advocating for sustainable and innovative approaches.

  • Drive R&D initiatives to prototype and validate new technologies (e.g., AI/ML integration, real-time analytics).

  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences, ensuring alignment across teams.

Your experience and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (advanced degree preferred).

  • 5-7 years in software engineering.

  • Proficiency in Python and Java, with experience in modern frameworks (e.g., Flask/FastAPI, Spring Boot).

  • Mastery of event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis), distributed systems, and cloud platforms (AWS, Kubernetes).

  • Strong background in building scalable, real-time data pipelines (Kafka, Flink, Airflow) and hybrid batch/stream systems.

  • Hands-on experience integrating and processing healthcare data standards: FHIR, CCDA, HL7 V2/V3, DICOM, etc.

  • Database design (SQL, NoSQL, DynamoDB) and data warehousing (Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake).

  • Demonstrated success in optimizing performance (latency, error rates) and reducing infrastructure costs (AWS)

  • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills; ability to navigate ambiguity and drive consensus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare technology or other regulated industries (Medicare/Medicaid, payor systems, EHR integrations).

  • Familiarity with real-time analytics, AI/ML integration, or genomic data pipelines

  • Track record of innovation in real-time reporting or streaming data products.

  • Working knowledge of healthcare security and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, HITRUST).

At this time we are only considering applicants in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.
