What is a Remote Epic Software Developer?

A Remote Epic Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software solutions for the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system while working remotely. These developers typically customize Epic modules, integrate third-party systems, and develop tools to enhance healthcare workflows. They collaborate with healthcare organizations, analysts, and end-users to ensure solutions meet clinical and operational needs. Remote Epic Software Developers use programming languages and tools specific to Epic, such as Chronicles, Interconnect, and Bridges, to create efficient and secure healthcare applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by a remote Epic Software Developer, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Epic Software Developers often face challenges such as effective communication with healthcare teams, navigating complex healthcare workflows, and ensuring data security compliance. Since much of the work involves close collaboration with clinical staff and analysts, proactive communication and leveraging collaboration tools are essential. Additionally, staying updated on Epic's frequent software updates and regulatory requirements can be demanding, so ongoing training and participation in Epic user communities can help developers remain effective and compliant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Epic Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Epic Software Developer, you need a strong background in software development, healthcare IT knowledge, and experience with Epic systems, often supported by a relevant degree or Epic certification. Proficiency with Epic programming tools (such as Chronicles, Caché, or Hyperspace), version control systems, and integration technologies is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient development, seamless system integration, and effective collaboration across distributed healthcare teams.

Job description

Inside Real Estate is a fast-growing, independently-owned real estate software firm that serves as a trusted technology partner to over 500,000 top brokerages, agents, and teams. Their branded portfolio, BoldTrail, includes BoldTrail (Front Office), BoldTrail BackOffice and BoldTrail Recruit, solutions that create a complete tech ecosystem for clients, and deliver seamless end-to-end operations to scale success at any level. With an accomplished leadership team and its talented staff, Inside Real Estate brings the resources, scale, and vision to deliver ongoing innovation and success to their growing customer base.
Our platform serves hundreds of thousands of real estate agents!
Ultimately, we help them run their businesses & make their lives easier when it comes to getting leads, managing those leads and listings, getting referrals, getting reviews, and generally staying top of mind/managing their reputation.
As an engineer on the Marketplace Ads Team, you will be responsible for architecting, implementing, and debugging software that helps real estate agents get, work, and manage new buyer/seller leads. You'll also be working on internal features that other departments at our company depend on in order to serve our real estate agents' needs. With every feature you implement, you will be finding ways to steward the codebase, creating examples of ideal architecture that can benefit the rest of the company and the engineers who come after you.
Context:
This will be a challenging position as you get up to speed. In order to deliver all that we do for our agents, we have a lot of different systems and layers of business logic in place. We are actively rethinking and reworking this part of the codebase so you will be entering in the middle of a transition and have a lot to catch up on.
Hard Skills:
  • Experience developing with PHP/Laravel, Vue.js, MySQL
  • Git, Docker, AWS
  • This is a full-stack web dev role, though day-to-day work leans backend-heavy (~70%) - strong backend chops matter most here.
  • PHPUnit/TDD
  • Bonus: experience writing software that manages leads/contacts, facilitates concierge services, or runs text/call campaigns

Soft Skills:
  • Good people skills and emotional intelligence
  • Actively participate in meetings and scrum ceremonies
  • Represent the company when communicating with third-party partners
  • Must be comfortable having camera on for some of our scrum ceremonies to connect regularly as a team (though you are definitely not expected to be on camera all the time)

You Will Win Here If You:
  • Are not just okay with growth, but actively pursue it. We do code review and you will be expected to both give and receive feedback (This includes enforcing coding standards, even ones you may personally disagree with). You will be expected to take an active role in shaping the culture and helping improve our processes.
  • Pursue excellence in everything you do
  • You understand and use patterns in code
  • Continuously learn and develop software patterns and best practices including those with AI, while also protecting against and not settling for AI slop.
  • Have a high level of ownership over the work you are producing and a high level of initiative to both find solutions and participate in our meetings.
  • Are self-directed and don't need much hand-holding after the initial onboarding
  • Code defensively, trying to reduce/eliminate "broken windows"
  • Are excited to help our agents, our other departments, and the company

We care more about drive and trajectory than years of experience - if you're earlier in your career but hungry to grow into this, and feel like you'd be a good culture fit, we would still love to hear from you.
At Inside Real Estate, we develop our engineers!
We offer a competitive total rewards package including:
  • Competitive salary
  • 3 Medical plans to choose from - 1 PPO and 2 HDHPs
  • 2 Dental plans to choose from
  • Vision
  • HSA - company-funded
  • FSAs - healthcare, limited purpose, dependent care
  • Short-Term Disability - company-paid
  • Long-Term Disability - company-paid
  • Basic Employee Life Insurance - company-paid
  • Voluntary Dependent Life Insurance
  • Voluntary Accident Insurance
  • Voluntary Critical Illness
  • Voluntary Hospital Indemnity
  • ID Protection
  • Pet Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings with company match
  • Paid PTO/Vacation/Sick Time
  • 11 company-recognized holidays
  • Company-paid Parental/Disability Leave

In addition, at IRE, we focus on driving top results providing:
  • Opportunities to grow within our company;
  • Potential to work in a remote setting;
  • Exciting/energetic work environment and fun, creative culture.

IRE EEO Statement - We believe that the unique contributions of all Insiders are the driver of our success.
