Remote Epic Software Developer information

What is a Remote Epic Software Developer?

A Remote Epic Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software solutions for the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system while working remotely. These developers typically customize Epic modules, integrate third-party systems, and develop tools to enhance healthcare workflows. They collaborate with healthcare organizations, analysts, and end-users to ensure solutions meet clinical and operational needs. Remote Epic Software Developers use programming languages and tools specific to Epic, such as Chronicles, Interconnect, and Bridges, to create efficient and secure healthcare applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by a remote Epic Software Developer, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Epic Software Developers often face challenges such as effective communication with healthcare teams, navigating complex healthcare workflows, and ensuring data security compliance. Since much of the work involves close collaboration with clinical staff and analysts, proactive communication and leveraging collaboration tools are essential. Additionally, staying updated on Epic's frequent software updates and regulatory requirements can be demanding, so ongoing training and participation in Epic user communities can help developers remain effective and compliant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Epic Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Epic Software Developer, you need a strong background in software development, healthcare IT knowledge, and experience with Epic systems, often supported by a relevant degree or Epic certification. Proficiency with Epic programming tools (such as Chronicles, Caché, or Hyperspace), version control systems, and integration technologies is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient development, seamless system integration, and effective collaboration across distributed healthcare teams.

Job description

Build the integrations that keep our technology ecosystem connected and moving forward.Hastings Insurance is seeking an Integration Developer to help build, enhance, and support the core APIs and microservices connecting our Property & Casualty systems. Working alongside senior developers and enterprise architects, you’ll help ensure data flows reliably across our enterprise footprint while actively contributing to our ongoing system modernization.
This role is ideal for an intellectually curious mid-level developer with solid backend C# fundamentals who wants to deepen their hands-on experience with modern microservices, containerized deployments, and AI-assisted development workflows. Location & ScheduleThis is a full-time position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The role may be performed onsite at our Hastings, Michigan headquarters or in a hybrid arrangement. We will also consider remote candidates who reside in one of our operating states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Wisconsin. What You'll Do
  • Build & Maintain | Develop, test, and deploy maintainable microservices, REST APIs, and integration components connecting core P&C applications.
  • Modernize Architecture | Work closely with senior developers to expand our catalog of decoupled backend services and adopt containerized deployment practices.
  • Support System Reliability | Assist in troubleshooting, maintaining, and enhancing existing integration workflows to ensure system performance and data integrity.
  • Adopt Modern Tooling | Utilize AI-assisted development practices (e.g., leveraging AI tools for coding, unit testing, and debugging) to increase daily productivity and code quality.
  • Collaborate & Estimate | Translate functional requirements into technical specs, participate in code reviews, and work with senior team members to provide accurate development estimates.
 What You'll Bring
  • Technical Foundation | 2+ years of hands-on backend software development experience focused on API development, C#, and relational databases.
  • Modern .NET & C# | Solid working knowledge of C# and modern .NET frameworks (with a focus on staying current with modern Microsoft releases like .NET 8/10).
  • Architecture & Messaging | Familiarity with microservice concepts, RESTful API design, database structures, and asynchronous messaging patterns.
  • Intellectual Curiosity & Problem-Solving | A natural drive to dig into complex systems, understand how things work at a fundamental level, and continuously learn new technologies and engineering practices.
  • Integration Range | Adaptability working across integration technologies spanning different framework generations as system requirements dictate.
  • Containerization Readiness | Exposure to or interest in container technologies (e.g., Docker) and learning containerized deployment pipelines.
  • Modern SDLC & Tooling | Practical understanding of standard software engineering practices, including Git, automated unit testing, CI/CD, and developer productivity tools.
  • Domain Experience (Nice to Have) | Prior experience in Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance or financial systems is a plus, but strong backend coding fundamentals come first.
